The Declaration of Independence of the United States gives people three natural rights, the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These are rights that all humans have, and nobody has the right to take them away. The right to life means nobody may take away the life of another person. The right to die is not one of the natural rights given to people under the Declaration of Independence. Many countries now, as well as individual states in the United States, are giving their citizens the right to die. However, the laws regarding this right differ from country to country as well as state to state. The term for this ending of a life with medical help is assisted suicide or euthanasia. Euthanasia is most often discussed as a practice performed by medical professionals. There are two types of euthanasia, active and passive. Active euthanasia is an occurrence where a doctor will give a patient a lethal dose of a drug, or a special drug meant to kill, in order to purposefully end the patient 's life. Passive euthanasia is where a doctor would withhold treatment from a patient resulting in their death. This is often referred to as "pulling the plug" when a patient is taken off of life support methods like a feeding tube. However, withdrawing treatment from a patient does not always constitute passive euthanasia. When treatment is ineffective or cannot maintain life, the end of treatment is not considered passive euthanasia. The other aspects of euthanasia break down into voluntary, non-voluntary, and involuntary. Voluntary euthanasia is when a patient fully understands that they are requesting death, and thinks that it is a better option than life due to their medical state.
