It is widely accepted that technology, specifically computers, can help students finish assignments in a much quicker and efficient manner. Microsoft Word and MyMathLab are just two examples of the many computer based programs commonly used in classrooms today. Most subjects that can be taught in a school can also use computers to complete course work. This has become commonplace in modern day’s technology savvy schools. Ask any student whether he would prefer doing a homework assignment on the computer in thirty minutes or by hand in two hours. Ask any teacher whether he would want to correct a nice, neatly typed assignment; or try to correct the chicken- scratch that is a hand written assignment. We all know what their answers are going to be. It takes a mindful person to ask what the downsides to the use of computers are. That hand written assignment, with its poor penmanship, might be a reflection on the student. Or, as this writer believes, the assignment is just one example of the many dangers of widespread computer overuse in academia.
One of the ways computers can be a danger to students starts even before they begin an assignment. Incorrectly estimating how long it will take to properly do an assignment is extremely dangerous for a student to do. One of the great benefits to the use of technology is they make slow tasks faster. The computer has made it quicker for students to write things like essays by using word processing programs like Microsoft Word. The program does this by having students type instead of physically writing out their paper. After all, it is easier and quicker to push a button than it is to pick up a pen or pencil and write. ... and the technology can fail, there are dangers to the use of computer. These dangers can be avoided if the user is aware of them. Only when used properly can computers become a tool with which one can improve themselves. Used incorrectly, computers are more destructive than they are good. Students must know that computers offer a lot of distractions and temptations that can prevent them from doing their work. Students should also be aware that the over-use of technology can dull skills that are still needed in today’s world. Individuals who wish to be successful in life must be able to write things by hand, using correct spelling and grammar. Even in modern times, there are still documents and papers that must be hand written. When these dangers are known, and steps are taken to avoid them, computers can then become a truly positive advancement for the human race.
