On April 19th in 1967, a baby by the name Andrea was born. She was 5 pounds and 8 ounces and thankfully, there were no complications during the pregnancy or during birth. However, Andrea was left at the hospital for nine days because the doctors were checking for blue baby syndrome, which is a reduction in the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood. As a result of this she lost 4 pounds, other than that she was a healthy baby. When she was cared for at the hospital Andrea got her days and nights backward, the night nurses would hold her and give her attention while in the daytime she slept. She was good with strangers and an easygoing baby that was not demanding. Andrea was given formula as a baby but would throw it up every day, the formula did not agree with her so at two months her mother, Terry gave her store bought milk, which caused no complications. Andrea recalled that her earliest childhood memory was when she was five years old when she and her family moved into their first house in Kahoka Missouri. This relates to infantile amnesia, which explains why Andrea can only remember a few memories of when she was a child and not all of them from being an infant. Andrea has three brothers, one brother is 11 months older and the other two brothers are four and six years younger. As a child Andrea was close with her older brother, Gary-jo because they were so close in age, she babied the youngest brother, Adam and did not get along with Cody, the brother that was four years younger. This is related to the attachment theory because as an infant through adolescents her mother was the primary caregiver. Her mother was a stay at home mother so the bond formed between the mother and children was closer than the father’s relationship. As a child she or her siblings were not left alone they were either at home with their mother, at their grandparent’s house, or at a friend’s home. Andrea knew how to take care of herself and she was independent but she was never left alone as a child. Andrea’s relationship with her father was not as close as her mother’s because he was the primary source of income he was always working. He was not available to the children’s needs as the role of a father. As parents they would fall under the authoritative parents category, they would always meet there children’s needs while enforcing parental control. The family dynamics of the household changed throughout the years of Dominic’s childhood. When Dominic was born, we lived in a rural neighborhood apartment that was not completely safe (My Virtual Child). Once Dominic’s sister Alexandra was born, we began saving more money and purchased a house in a safe rural neighborhood. At the end of Dominic’s childhood the household consisted of both parents and two children, Dominic and Alexandra. Throughout his childhood, his uncle stayed a summer and on another occasion a different uncle stayed for a few weeks. Both parents were employed throughout the entire childhood which resulted in placing Dominic in child-care as soon as possible (My Virtual Child).

Aileen Wuornos was born on February 29, 1956 in Rochester, Michigan; at a young age she and her brother, Keith, were raised by their grandparents, after her parents divorced just months before Aileen was born. Her father, a career criminal, was later convicted of kidnapping and raping a seven year old girl and eventually hung himself in his prison cell. In 1983, Nancy Beth Cruzan lapsed into an irreversible coma from an auto accident in Jasper County, Missouri. Cruzan was discovered lying face down in a ditch without detectable respiratory or cardiac function. Paramedics were able to restore her breathing and heartbeat at the accident site, and she was transported to a hospital in an unconscious state. An attending neurosurgeon diagnosed her as having sustained cerebral injuries combined with significant lack of oxygen. The estimated length of the period without oxygen was twelve to fourteen minutes. (Permanent brain damage generally results after six minutes without oxygen.) After the accident Nancy was not breathing on her own and was connected to a machine, five days later she was breathing on her own and the respirator was disconnected. She remained in a coma for approximately three weeks and then progressed to an unconscious state in which she was able to orally ingest some nutrition. She was moved out of ICU into a private room where the family tried on a daily basis to get a response. In order to ease feeding and further the recovery, surgeons implanted a gastrostomy feeding and hydration tube in Cruzan with the consent of her then husband. Mary Ainsworth was known as the mother of attachment research, she tested Bowlby’s theory of attachment. She conducted a stress test better known as The Strange Situation Procedure. This consists of a series of staged episodes that illustrate the strength of attachment between a child and usually his or her mother. “The “strange situation” follows an eight-step pattern: (1) The mother and the baby enter an unfamiliar room; (2) the mother sits down, leaving the baby free to explore; (3) an adult stranger enters the room and converses first with the mother and then with the baby; (4) the mother exits the room, leaving the baby alone with the stranger; (5) the mother returns, greeting and comforting the baby, and the stranger leaves; (6) the mother departs again, leaving the baby alone; (7) the stranger returns; and (8) the mother returns and the stranger leaves.” (Cite) There are four different attachment patterns: secure, avoidant, resistant/ambivalent, and disorganized. In a normal functioning family, both parent and child care for and love one another, and display these feelings. A parent is required to nurture his or her child and assure that the child feels loved by spending time together, and by giving the child sufficient attention. However, there are often times when a parent is unable to fulfill these requirements, which can ultimately have damaging effects on the child. A child who is neglected by his or her parents “perceives the world as a hostile and uncaring place. In addition to this negative perception of the world, the neglect a child faces affects later interaction with his or her peers, prompting the child to become anxious and overly withdrawn” (Goldman). This neglectful type of parenting proves to be a pattern in the novel Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, as the main characters, Jimmy, Crake, and Oryx are crucially affected by their parents’ choices and are unjustly abandoned by them. In this novel, the neglect of parents, especially mothers, is clearly reflected in the behaviours of the three main characters.

Attachment theory explains the human’s way of relating to a caregiver and receives an attachment figures relating to the parent, and children. In addition, the concept explains the confidence and ability for a child to free explore their environment with a place to seek support, protection, and comfort in times of distress (Levy, Ellison, Scott, and Bernecker, 2010, p. 193). Within attachment theory explains different types of attachment styles that children experience during early childhood. These attachment styles affect the relationships they continue to build in adulthood. The best attachment style happens when the parent is attuned to the child during his or her early childhood called secure attachment (Reyes, 2010, p. 174). In order for complete secure attachment, the child needs to feel safe, seen, and soothed. Any relationship that deviates from this model represents the anxious or insecure attachment. The father’s upbringing was such that financial stability was the priority. The child learned that dads are busy and do not have time to spend with their children. What a devastating realization for a child to conclude. Yet like most little boys, this one wanted to grow up to be like his role model, no matter the example. During the time from childhood to adolescent, parental influence can be either beneficial or detrimental. If the parents have a stable home, clear boundaries and open communications with their teens, the transition could flow easier. The perfect father does not guarantee the child will not rebel.

There dad was an alcoholic who disappeared for days at a time, and bouncing from job to job. When he was home and drinking he “turned into an angry-eyed stranger who threw around furniture and threatened to beat up [their] mom or anyone who got in his way”(23). Most of her memories of her dad are him being drunk, which turns him abusive and rude. They don’t have much money so she looks at is as good opportunity for her father to stop drinking. She was given her due date, July 17. Shortly after, she would feel the thump, thump of mine and my sisters ' kicks against her stomach, you could even see our hand and foot-prints extending out from her stomach. On the 22 of may, my mother was awoken in horror, surrounded in a puddle of blood. She was rushed to the hospital where she was told she had hemorrhaged, one of her children went into respiratory distress, and she had placental abruption which caused the hemorrhaging. An emergency C-section was needed immediately if she wanted my sister and me to live. They wheeled her in, and began the procedure. At 7:40 in the morning, my sister was taken from my mothers uterus, not breathing or eating; I followed two minutes later, perfectly healthy. A breathing tube was placed into my sister, pumping her small fragile lungs with essential oxygen, and later a feeding tube was placed. Because of our prematurity, we were extremely small. My sister, who my mother decided on naming Taylor, weighed four pounds two ounces, I was three pounds twelve ounces. We had to be incubated until was at a healthy weight for an infant, and until Taylor reached the breathing and feeding stage. We shared an incubator, I would scoot towards her. Doctors were not sure whether I did this to make sure she was okay, to protect her, to give her warmth, or because we were in the same position in the womb.
