The first day of school is the most important day for the student and teacher. In my classroom I would like to have an introduction assignment that the students can fill out. I will put important questions on there that will allow me to get to know each of my student 's better. You have to be able to know each student, so that you can learn about who they are, how they best learn, and what their home life is like. You may be faced with a child that has parents that don 't promote learning at home and if I don 't ask a question like, “Do your parents help you study at home,” I may not learn that until later in the year. In case of me having to be absence the students will know what they are suppose to be doing and can help the sub if needed. I can guarantee that punishment is not the answer. Punishment is a suggestion made by reformers (Postman, 311), but it is the absolute worst decision that can be made in our schools. When students get out of school suspension (OSS), they treat it as a vacation day and most of them use it to play video games, and they still get to make up the work they missed. On Thursday, September 15, 2016 there was a board meeting in the Education center in Philadelphia. There were seven board members on the school board meeting position; five woman, two men; two African Americans and five Caucasians. Multiple genders and ethnic groups attended the meeting and the audience were sitting in a theater setting, where as the board members were sitting facing the audience up front. It started at 4:30 p.m. and a African American man did attendance to people that were going to speak and talked about the agenda of what 's going on that evening. When I reflect back to the beginning of this semester I am astonished at how much I have learned. English 124 has been a real eye opener for me. Not only have I grown as a writer, but it has challenged me to become more of a critical thinker. In the class we have read many articles on diverse topics, studied theories of history’s greatest philosophers of education, and wrote various styles of papers.
The hypothetical school, Ocean Elementary School, services students in kindergarten through grade six. The school is relatively small with a total student population of 256 students. There is a diverse mix of students with the two largest ethnicities being Asian and Pacific Islander at 43% and Caucasian at 32%. There is a mixture of socioeconomic statuses with most students being in a mid to low range socioeconomic status. There are varying ability levels within the school. The school’s mission statement is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where high quality and relevant instruction will prepare all students for their future as a global citizen.
Going into this class, I was quite scared. Throughout my high school years, all the teachers would tell us that college papers are a minimum of ten pages long and the professors grade critically. I did not have English teachers in the past who guided me through my writing, they just would slap a grade on it. English was my first class of my first college day.
As the classroom facilitator, an effective approach to discipline would perhaps be to allow the students to expand and/or design their own disciplinary procedures. If they are allowed to prescribe the penalties they must pay for inappropriate behavior, they might be more likely to embrace these penalties rather than rebel against teacher/school policies.
We spoke about the children in the classroom who have personalities and learning styles that are unique to them. Building a relationship with each child, gives her the opportunity to gain the necessary knowledge to create lesson plans that are relatable to their personalities and learning styles. Her association with the children impacts their feelings of safety and security which relates to their ability to interact and learn in the classroom. This being my first year of teaching I feel there are so many things that I have learned, and have helped me too become a good teacher. Yet I have so much more to learn, I still believe that students have the ability to learn and as a teacher it is my job to find ways to help them to become the best person they can be. Through being a reflective teacher, using professionalism, respecting diversity and having collaboration and community connecting this can be accomplished. When I am having fun teaching the student will have learning that material, this will help them to be relaxed and engaged in that lesson. I feel it is important to connect what they are learning to things that they have experienced in the real-world.
Every student will have a bad day occasionally. I think that is completely normal, they are still humans with emotions. In this circumstance the easiest way to deal with it is by asking them what’s wrong. Our student may be younger than us, but they still have problems that can be going on in their lives. I believe it is important that if a student is acting out to find out what the core of their problem is. A student could have some deep-root problems that they can’t talk to their parents about because they may be the issue. When these issues happen, it is important to care for your student. When it comes down to discipline issues I feel like respect should be given. Every student deserves a second chance; do not kick them out because they talked once to their friends. Simply just make them move to a different seat in the room before taking higher measures. In high school, English was my strongest and favorite subject. I never had to work as hard in English as I did in math or any other subjects I took in high school. My peers would cram all night for a Literature test we were going to have but not I. I excelled in writing essays about Moby Dick and his white Whale or Beowulf and Grendel. My confidence in my ability to write was always high and when I enrolled at Chattahoochee, I assumed my confidence would not waiver. When I received my grade for my first paper, I was in shock of all the red ink that covered it. English 1101 taught me the skills I needed to have to be able to write a great paper and prepared me for what was to come for English 1102. English 1102 have taught me to rethink my abilities as a writer and to work harder and spend more time on my essays and think outside the box.
