The Coffee Shop has been around since 1992. Many people waltz in and out of The Coffee Shop everyday, you may even be one of these people who on route to class make a quick stop. But as you exit the building did you notice the small crack at the base of the wall. Where an upset employee threw a tray of mugs? Most likely not, This is one of the many stories that have been shared with me by employees of The Coffee Shop, regular customers, and people who have never stepped foot into The Coffee Shop at.
With a place that has been around as long as The Coffee Shop has you are bound to have some good tales to tell. One begins with an innocent looking collegiate sophomore strolling into The Coffee Shop. As he strutted into the café with ill intentions he assessed the local talent residing within the edifice. He couldn't help but want to sit next to the only dark haired woman sipping on a java in the corner. The attack was on, recognizing the book she was reading he approached her with a nonchalant question. "Are you studying for the math test this week?" He knew she was, and her answer as expected was, "yes". It was all down hill from here. Playing the innocent schoolboy, he skillfully manipulated past her hesitant demeanor, and convinced her into studying with him that night at the cafe. He met her at Jitters as planned and the night turned into a great study session. Which he planned, as he did not want to seem overly aggressive or desperate. As the night winded down so did her guard, he asked her if she would like something to drink. She was very receptive to his proposal. He chose a nice expresso with a shot of amarettto. He could tell that after studying with her for the whole night she was trusting to his op...

...stories piece together? The answer to that is simple, they don't. These stories true or false are recollections of people who have had some type of encounter with Jitters café. And what an amazing café it is. So, you can listen to people such as Evan Larkin who has never been to Jitters and states "coffee houses are all the same, and The Coffee Shop is no different. It's people who think they are better than everyone else and have an attitude, that's not for me, only fags go there." Or you can take the ½ mile walk from campus and find out for yourself. Now the choice is in your hands, "I'll be here tomorrow round the same time, stop by!"

North of Manhattan, a good cup of coffee is hard to come by; the taste is lacking in strength and not much thought is put into its production. Profit-seeking coffee chains like Dunkin Donuts and Donut Delight are widespread and lack in quality. More often than not, coffee is a $3 afterthought of dessert, rather than a delicacy in itself. Lorca cafe, situated in downtown Stamford on Bedford Street, appreciates the artistry and skill that must be employed to brew a decent cup of coffee. Spanish and western-Mediterranean influences are uniform throughout the flavors and venue. The chic, modern atmosphere is equipped with ample power outlets to provide the perfect workplace for the productive coffee drinker. Imported foreign blends and locally baked goods unite to create a perfect harmony of flavors from near and far. The Instagram-famous aspect of the restaurant appeals to social media butterflies with an affinity for art. Dynamic artwork, the friendly staff, and addicting flavors encourage recurrent visits.
Most people will not recognize the name Stella Liebeck but say the words “hot coffee lawsuit” and recognition will be instant. The story is almost so well known that it has almost passed into the realm of urban legend or myth. And in the broad strokes it has become a bit of a myth. An old woman drives through a McDonald’s drive through, orders a cup of coffee and then promptly and recklessly spills the beverage all over her legs. Then in search of an easy payday she sues the restaurant for millions of dollars, ultimately walking away a millionaire with no more damage than a ruined pair of sweatpants. The story has been held up as a parable for what is wrong with America today. The well-worn story can be held up to serve as a totem pole for any number of issues. People don’t want to work for money anymore, just look at that hot coffee lady. People don’t want to take responsibility for their actions, just look at that hot coffee lady. People are idiots, look at that coffee lady. As it turns out, the “coffee lady” is a good story for examining the world we live in today, but not for the reasons that might be expected.
Inside the coffee shop, a great deal of thought has been put into spatial distribution. The space is small, but every square centimeter is utilized for sitting, ordering and preparing and displaying food. The floor plan allows customers to move in a structured way to order and then sit down or leave. The floor plan is similar to a continuous circular flow of costumers, that starts when you walk in the door and ends when you leave. Like an assembly line, this suggests that Canadian culture is very rigid and structured. The sitting area consists of small tables that let only three people sit comfortably at one time. The sitting chairs are upright with a hard surface; they're not comfortable and relaxing in the least bit. Upbeat easy rock music plays in the background, this music is very safe in that all ages can identify and accept it while still loud enough to not hear the noisy kitchen in the back. Bright lights, along with the chairs, tables and music create an atmosphere and mood that does not allow people to get too comfortable.
Coffee shop are seen as a social place. Yeah right, more like the ‘social media’ side of being social. There are so many effects that this can have on your brain, not to mention what has already happened to our brains.
Coffee has been around the market and homes for a very long time now. The first coffee shop in the United States opened in 1697 in New York. Today, nearly two-thirds of americans drink coffee. Coffee is usually associated with 'waking up' or 'staying awake' due to your high caffeine level, and it's invevitable to these two coffee chains be overcrowded during the rush hours in the morning. Coffee shops are always trying to innovate with different coffee flavor or mixtures to make them standout more than the other competitors. Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts are the two coffee chains most popular in the United States. Starbucks was founded in 1971 in Seattle, Washington. While Dunkin' Donuts has been a bit longer around the market, being founded in 1950 in Quincy, Massachusetts. Dunkin' Donuts is famous for your convencience and for your coffee accompainments as donuts and sandwiches. On the other hand, Starbucks gets the customer's attention with its stress-free athmosphere and the extensive options of coffee mixed drinks.
The inside of the cafe is like walking into breakfast heaven, there is murals on every wall, all of Manhattan, New York. There are several coffee pots lining the counter and little wood tables with rickety chairs are squished into every corner it feels a lot like home. The aroma of bagels and bacon waft in the air as you walk in, but right next to the coffee pots, a coffee bomb goes off, going on until the powerful smell of bagels overthrows the overwhelming scent. Behind the counter you can see the chefs working together in a perfect rhythm. The line is always just inside the door, for the happy people waiting in line just draws you into the relaxed and beaten up restaurant..
Starbucks is one of the largest coffee franchises in the world. With over 26,000 stores in 64 countries, the company has the right to brag about this. One of the problems which Starbucks is currently being faced with is the brand being watered down by over expansion and a too diverse product mix. With McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts entering into the specialty coffee market, Starbucks needs to alter the path which it is going in order to remain competitive in this industry.
Starbucks is a corporation that offers specialty coffees, coffee beans, cold blended beverages, pastries, coffee related products and machines, and tea. Starbucks opened its first location in 1971 in Seattle. By the year 2000, Starbucks had over 3300 locations, and it is still growing.
Coffee has played a major role in the lives of many people around the world. “Yet, poetic as its taste may be, coffee’s history is rife with controversy and politics…[becoming a] creator of revolutionary sedition in Arab countries and in Europe” (Pendergrast xvi). After reading Uncommon Grounds, it is apparent that the history of coffee is intertwined with the aspects of the globalization process, the role of Multi-National Corporations, and global economic issues.
Sitting in Korouva on a Sunday night is an almost awkward experience for me as I am the only “customer” in there with the barista and her friend. But the jazz music is good and my almond milk/pumpkin spice latte is tasty. Every wall in the tiny building is covered in art. Korouva Milk Bar on 2005 Maple Street is a unique space for students to come drink coffee, tea, milkshakes, and creatively named smoothies. It is not a place where I would take my mother. After having been in Korouva during various times in my first semester at Southwestern, I decided to write my ethnography with the aim of figuring out just who Korouva is for. So I spent several more days there over the course of a week to see who walked through the door, or rather, one of two doors. The front door, facing the street, features princess Leia smoking a cigarette saying “be like me, don’t buy ExxonMobil” and “Come back soon… or
The majority of the customers are college or university students who came to do their assignment individually or in group. Some come to the coffee shop and grabbed food from shelves and then went to the casher. Some looked around the surroundings to find empty sittings and then put their stuff on the sitting that they found. Then they went to the food area to pick food and takes time on reading the ingredients list found on the package. Also, a group of people, particularly, who had friends waiting for them, went to a table, put down their stuff like school bag, lap tops and then went to the line to buy a
The coffee shop I decided to do my observation was the well known Starbucks just a couple blocks away. The reason I chose this coffee shop was because of it 's style inside, it attracted me. For example, one side of the wall has a glass top, and the lower part of the wall, made of wood and painted in a bright red color, which was one thing that attracted me and stood out. Outside of the shop people can actually see through the glass wall and get to see what’s happening inside of the coffeeshop. By the entrance you see these two red ceiling lamps which were shaped in a flower bud and these two tall green plants. Once you were in, on the right of the shop there was a counter with food and things to put in your drinks such as milk, sugar, chocolate, etc and the colors and how the food was displayed and served was appealing to my eyes. Behind that counter there was a long table with different electronic devices plugged into the wall. On the middle of the those there is a fridge just for ice and when I turned to the other side and I noticed a big menu on the wall. Further more into the shop, there was an area filled with tables, chairs, and sofas. The tables were in different shapes, one was round and the others rectangular, also there was four bamboo baskets and I looked around and noticed that the walls in that area were decorated with paintings.
Another question in which was asked of me was; what do the customers order? Since my scan was done at night most drinks that where ordered where hot. Also some people would order a pastries with there drinks in which could be a coffee cake, or a chocolate espresso browny, or one of the other pastries in which where offered. People ordered many different types of drinks such as hot chocolate, vanilla crème, and coffee. An item in which people also order but was rare is the sandwiches in which Starbucks makes daily. While listening to what people order there was a coffee language in which was used a lot and one that every customer knew, this language was the language in which told the employees what size of drinks they wanted.
One of my favorite places located along Fifth Avenue is Starbucks, a coffee shop offering many different types of coffees, teas, and snacks. I frequently find my way down to this coffee shop after school meetings, on weekends, or on days when I just ne...
The other day I walked into the supermarket to buy a box of Kleenex. I was faced with a variety of colors, textures, box designs, and even the option of aloe. All these features designed for a product to blow my nose into! Selection wasn't limited to the Kleenex section, either…I found abundance in every aisle. We seem to always want more - more choices, more variety, more time. In fact, even the word "supermarket" implies a desire for more than just a simple market.
