When we think of global warming, we think in the present. Not realizing this began centuries ago, which some scientist believe that earth has, ever so slowing, been warming up since the ice age. Still yet some claim the Industrial Age, of when coal, railroads and developing of lands, was responsible for the global warming. It was not until the 1970’s that global warming came into public awareness and even then it was not recognized as a serious issue. However, in 2004 global warming finally became a ’hot’ item, in September 2004 when it made the cover of National Geographic magazine, in May 2004 a smash hit movie, ‘The Day After Tomorrow’, and in December 2004, a best selling novel by Michael Crichton, State of Fear. However, it still remains …show more content…
On January 15, 2004, Al Gore gave a speech about global warming and the environment. He outlined for us what the scientific community has been warning us about the future of our planet. He won a Academy Award in 2006 for his movie, “The Inconvenient Truth” a documentary on global warming and in 2007 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in climate change. He is also the founder of the Alliances for Climate Protection. Yet, there are some politicians who believe climate change is real, however human activity is not the cause. Climate has always changed throughout the years and will continue to do so, but we cannot change the climate. Until all politicians embrace that there is a global climate crisis, we cannot progress toward resolutions to reduce gas emissions into the atmosphere. It is a sad commentary, that our nations leaders have chosen to make climate change a political football. Most of the opposition stems from the Republican party and their refusal to accept that climate change is real and that mans activities are contributing to temperature rises and a shift in climate patterns. It is remarkable to note, that since 2005, our politicians affirmed that climate change was real and now that nearly a decade later, there is still no plan of action in place with a timeline for resolutions and adoption’s on how to bring about, to halt and reverse mans overuse of mainly fossil fuels. Al Gore wrote on June 25, 2013, an article titled, “The Best Presidential Address on Climate Change Ever”. Al Gore said it was a “historic speech”. President Barack Obama in a State of The Union Address on June 25, 2013, spoke about the global warming and his plans for a new
“At present, the global system for carbon emissions trading is embodied in the Kyoto Treaty,” said Al Gore, which points out that Global Warming is not a national problem, but global problem. The Kyoto Treaty states that parties involved will reduce greenhouse emissions in their nation (United Nations). These facts introduce the idea of transforming this perilous world into an innocuous one. It supports his claim for having a preferable future for all, where there will be no droughts, devastations, deaths, or poverties due to global warming. His repetition of the word “reduce” engages the audience of having a solution to climate change. Mr. Gore continues with his ideas to reduce Global Warming by saying, “...Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CSS)...will play a significant...role as one of the major blocks of a solution to climate crisis.” This fact is an example of a paradox as before this statement he mentioned that CSS, a method to capture the CO2 burned from the burning coal, is an expensive method which most companies resist from using. His use of paradoxes throughout his speech makes the audience rethink their opinions. These statistics are part of many other logically statements that Mr. Gore used to support his claim. Some of these logical procedures include; electronic cars, reduction of renewable
My parents grew up in small town in Mexico. There was a little river that went through part of the town when they were growing up. Every weekend or so they would go out and would go swimming with their families, it almost became a tradition to go swimming there until they noticed that the river 's water level was becoming smaller and smaller. Today there is no river anymore, instead it 's a road that travels through the town. Every time I visit my family in Mexico it would alway be nice and warm up until this year when I went in December. I remember waking up and getting ready to go to my aunt 's house in clothes for warm weather. As I open the door, the cold air punch me and I saw snowflakes falling down. It 's not supposed to snow in that
Global warming has become on of the most controversial issues in the media today. While most of the Western world countries have generally accepted the premise that man's chemical emissions in the atmosphere can and are affected by the world’s climate patterns, in the United States, the issue has become so politicized with many republicans challenging the science behind the theory. Global warming is a greenhouse effect whereby gases are trapped on the earth’s surface causing it to heat up (Maslin 14). It is based on the worldwide temperature records that have been maintained by human beings through their activities since the 1880,s. In addition, global warming is not only caused by human activities only but also through climate changes in solar radiance. The problem is that, humans continue to contribute to the global warming phenomenon. All citizens should work in reducing human activities that cause global warming and also support the development of nuclear power. Scientists deem that, global warming is mainly caused by human activities which accelerate the natural process by creating greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Human activities have become a great contribution to the greenhouse effect and this means that climate changes are inevitable. They further argue that, if these activities continue and are not reduced, it will lead to more trapping of energy radiated from the earth and this will likely lead to extreme weather and global warming. Global warming should be at reduced levels or else, it will be catastrophic.
Climate change crisis has received numerous attempts to falsify or theorize its mere essence. Deniers are wholeheartedly fighting against it and the majority of the confused public is claiming doubt about the severity and the factuality of it. Yet, a question of personal integrity arises, are people in denial about climate change because they are genuinely confused or because they are afraid of the consequences of facing it? The answer may not be simple to state, especially since inner motivations and reasons can vary significantly from one person to another. The authors, Al Gore, Schulman and Klein, take a definite stand agreeing on people’s denial as fear of the consequences related to addressing climate crisis are discussed in their articles
For these reasons, global warming stands as one of the most daunting policy issues facing our world today. This is compounded by the debate over the very existence of climate change. While countless sources of empirical evidence testify to the very real presence of climate change the world over, considerable denial of the phenomenon still exists. The argument has been made that evidence about climate change is a gross overstatement, or in some cases, a complete fabrication. Despite the evidence to the contrary, many interest groups with considerable political clout have successfully perpetuated the argument that documented changes in the environment are a product of natural cyclical changes in climate, and are not associated with human activities. However, even the acceptance of this particular brand of reality is no grounds for the disregard of environmental consciousness. Even if one accepts the premise that recent climate change is not resultant of human activity, the rationale behind environmental conservation remains ...
(Gibbs, 2014). Society feeds off each other and builds a large concern through judgment. Similarly, climate change has had an impact on our planet for many years and concern is displayed by scientists and humans. One has the choice to judge and take action by raising awareness, and as Obama states in his speech, “Some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science, but none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires, and crippling drought, and more powerful storms” (Puschak, 2013). An issue all must set their differences aside and consider to do something about.
Climate change. The two letter word so feared by scientists, so ignored by the average human being. What is it that makes scientists fear this phrase so much? For the concept of “climate change” has been seen throughout the history of the earths existence. For centuries, our climate has fluctuated through increasing and decreasing amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide and climatic cycles. So what is the big deal? The problem, and the reason why this concept instills fear directly into the core of scientists is the rate at which over the past 1,300 years atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have risen. This unnatural increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide, due to the immense amount of anthropogenic burning of oil and coal, affects the transfer
I am writing to you in regards to addressing the serious problem of burning coal. Coal burning has become a serious problem all around the world, and it has a major effect on our global climate. Firstly, the process of burning coal gives off nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide, among other gases. Not only is coal burning the leading cause of acid rain, smog and toxic air pollution, but coal plants are the leading cause of global warming (Union of Concerned Scientists, n.d.).
Humans are dumping 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the environment every second and cutting down 62 acres of trees every minute. Destroying the natural cycles between the atmosphere and the earth’s surface, humans are slowly wearing away at the environment. And what is the long term effect of this constant wearing? Well, the Earth’s surface temperature is increasing at an unusually rapid rate. Although it only seems to be progressing slowly, global warming will catastrophically affect all life living in the biosphere because of how fast it is happening.
Climate change has been an extremely controversial topic in recent history and continues to create much debate today. Many questions concerning climate change’s origins and its potential affect on the globe are not fully understood and remain unanswered. What is climate change? Is climate change happening? Is it a natural cycle of the world or are there other catalysts involved such as human activity? What proof is there? What data correlations show climate change is accelerated by humans? How serious is climate change and how will it affect the future of our globe? What are we doing to address climate change? Should we really be concerned about climate change? Questions such as these have made climate change a very serious issue in today’s world and created the ideology of climatism. The issue of climate change has affected many different aspects of our lives and the world we live in. Policymaking, human activism, technologies, emission control, global warming, alternative energy sources and many other things have been greatly affected by the mania of climate change. This research report will present climate change in a light of common sense and rationality that will take a grounded discussion of the science behind climate change, global warming, human activity, and how the ideology of climatism has corrupted and driven the actions to combat climate change.
Anthony Giddens believes that the main reason why we ignore the problems of the climate is our obsession with immediate problems. He believes that we do not care about what will happen ten, twenty, or fifty years from now, and that we rather worry about what is going to happen today (Giddens, 2009). He claims that the international community does in fact see that the future of the world is at risk due to climate change, but other impeding problems like war, poverty, and economic status is more important to them. He does not see the world as having a “systematic politics of climate change” hindering any chance of significant climate change measures to be done (Giddens, 2009). He concludes by claiming that politics will hold up the bill indefinitely and that energy security is the most valued entity that these governments protect.
Even if the reason of climate change may be the natural cycles, we humans are the major determinant to it. The huge amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is causing the climate change and this amount is rising day by day, as a result of our actions. Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, generally absorb and emit the heat in the atmosphere to keep the Earth’s climate habitable. However, as we continue to burn fossil fuels, this habitable Earth’s temperature will blow up, and as a result, some species will die out due to various problems which are caused by climate change. According to EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the most obvious consequence of climate change is the rising sea levels, which will cause some seashore habitats to become unavailable to live to its species.
A new Pentagon report mentioned that global warming is one of the urgent and growing threat to “national security”(Nakamura, 2015, para 1). Presidential contender/Senator/ Bernie Sanders also pointed out that “global warming, not terrorism or nuclear weapon proliferation or Chinese hacking, is the biggest threat facing the country”(Follett, 2015, para 1). Global warming contributes to the death of 400,000 people a year and costing the world more than $1.2 trillion, which is about 1.6% of the annual global GDP (Harvey, 2012, para 4). Raising social awareness about the effect of global warming is the first step to avert the damaging consequences.Today, I would like to present to you what causes global warming, the effects of global warming on weather conditions
Background and Audience Relevance: There are always conversations about our planet. We see our earths glaciers melting, weather temperature rising, and pollution affecting our resources. But for some reasons we tend to look away. We should be more aware of this potential event and I’m here to inform everyone about what actually is global warming and the effects of it.
One of the most substantial problems in the world today is global warming. This gradual warming of the earth is in occurrence at an extremely slow rate but it is happening. Many scientists believe that as human’s work and release greenhouse gases into the earth’s atmosphere, it can become dangerous for the long lasting life of humans and our environment. “Unless we take immediate action, the impacts of global warming will continue to intensify, grow ever more costly and damaging, and increasingly affect the entire planet - including you, your community, and your family” (“Global Warming Impacts”). Everyone should be knowledgeable about global warming and the dangers that it brings to our planet. This essay will examine
