Drunk Driving Drunk driving is still prevalent in our society as one of the biggest curses of all times. In the year 2008, about thirty two percent of about thirty seven thousand, two hundred and sixty one people suffered tragic deaths due to drunk driving. All these deaths were alcohol related and this alcohol has been the cause of many more loss of life in United States than the people lost in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. Even though there has been a steady fall in drunk driving over the past thirty years but it has been honestly slow. By considering the statistics, we can conclude that the era of drunk driving is soon to be extinct (Worrall). Stating to rule out all the laws regarding drunk driving does not seem to be an intelligent decision though. It is radical but if we first think on behavior, we will be able to receive better outcomes. The punishable act should be causing accident or violating rules of the road rather than the factors which ultimate to these offenses. Pointing to damage caused by alcohol for additional punishment is not about making road any safer. It is about remaining hostility towards demon odd. A bold suggestion brought to the rescue is whether alcohol any different from other distractions such as adjusting radio, interacting with other people on the car, using cell phone, or eating? (Worrall). Alcohol in real sense is a distraction. One actually pays more attention when he or she is drunk. People do this because they know that their reaction time is damaged by alcohol. But alcohol impairs judgments and calculations as well. If there is not a precise rule as to driving and drinking and if people are believed to make unhealthy decisions about what they can do and what they can’t, a drunk person is ... ... middle of paper ... ...vers. It should not matter whether prescription, sleep lack, medication, alcohol, road rage, text messaging or a phone call caused this. If lawmakers need to stick to ugly drivers who threaten everybody else coming on their way on road, they can dial up criminal and civil liability for reckless driving, particularly in cases that outcome in property damage or injury. Getting away from a special charge of drunken driving does sound hasty at first but it would put the emphasis on impairment where it actually belong. It might restore some civil liberties casualty impairment caused by massive Governmental power which says it needs to be convicted and catch the drunken drivers. If this offence was reckless instead of driving, then drunken driving is not the only crime here. There would be no requirement for cop to jam a needle in one’s arm alongside busy highway (Balko).
