The Danger and the Difficulties Faced by Soldiers on the Western Front

After the bloody battle at the town of Ypres in October to November

1914, the Germans suffered very heavy casualties. And just after a

month of battle, they had about 20,000 of Germans finest troops were

kill and 80,000 wounded while the British only had 8000. The "war of

movement" ended on 22nd of November and both sides now had dug

themselves trenches and here attempts were made to prepare men for

life in the trenches and starts dealing with problems such as lice,

trench foot, trench rats, poison gas, and many other dangers and

difficulties….

Men in the trenches suffered from lice. They created a sour; stale

smell and as one soldier described them "As we sat up in bed watching

the shirt he had taken off and put it on the floor it actually lifted;

it was swarming with lice.". Many methods were used to get rid of the

lice, a lighted candle was the easiest and most effective, but the

skill of burning the lice without burning their clothes can only be

learnt with practice. The army arranged for the men to have baths in

huge vats of hot water where possible, and puts their clothes through

delousing machines. Unfortunately, this rarely worked. The

proportional remains of the eggs left in the clothes only takes around

two or three hours of the clothes being put on again a man's body heat

to hatched them out.

As well as causing frenzied scratching, lice also carried disease.

This was known as Pyrexia or Trench Fever. The first symptoms were

shooting pains in the shins and were followed by a very high fever.

Although the disease did not kill, it did stop soldiers from fighting

and accounted for about 15% of all cases of sickness in the British

Army.

Text Box: Henry Gregory of 119th Machine Gun Company was interviewed after the war about life in the trenches. “When we arrived in the trenches we got a shock when the other soldiers in the hut took their shirts off after tea.
