The Crusades

As Patriarch Bartholomew I said eight years ago, “The spirit of reconciliation is stronger than hatred.” These words should drive the actions of the Christian population when apologizing for the heinous actions of the Crusades toward the Jewish and Muslim communities. Although all the people who were a part of the actual event are no longer living, the situation continues on because there has been no closure. The Crusades, an event close to 900 years ago, needs to be ended with a formal apology from Christians to all those effected. To the Muslim and Jewish families today, who are ancestors to some of the victims of the Crusades, an apology would finally close the open wounds. Christians have apologized before for other similar events, and eventually they are going to have to do the same for the Crusades. Additionally, the positive connotation of the word “crusade” needs to be altered because there is nothing to honor in this situation. It is important that the Christian religion go through a “cleansing” process to improve their relationship with outsiders otherwise future generations will be unable to advance in their ways of thinking.

It is almost as if the Christians seem to be holding grudges against the Muslim and Jews which would explain why they are withholding their apology. However, Christians have formally made it known that they were at fault for this major event when they, the Roman Catholics, offered a gesture of remorse for the fourth Crusade. In 2001, Pope John Paul paid a visit to Greece to apologize for the actions of his forefathers in the taking of Constantinople 800 years prior. ... that an apology is more than just the right thing to do; it is the only thing to do. Other Christians followers need to accept this idea and apologize for events during the Crusades. Christians have already admitted their wrongs in other similar situations, which shows that they, as a whole society, understand their only option in finally ending such a horrific event. It is also imperative that the context that the word 'Crusade' is used in is one that is not positive. This will diminish the idea that the Crusades were a honorable event in history. When apologizing, the new era of Christians will get a sense of religious cleansing because they will get to erase the hard feelings from 900 years prior. Although it will not revive the dead or make the Crusades any less horrendous than they were, an apology from the Christians is a necessary action that is long overdue.
