The Creation of the Chevy Camaro
When Ford introduced the Mustang in 1964 there was no immediate reaction from General Motors, but by August of '64, just four months after the Mustang's introduction, GM realized the appeal of a four seat sports car. Ironically, the Mustang was created in response to the Chevrolet Corvair Monza!
GM had actually begun preliminary work on such a car as early as 1958, according to Pontiac Designer Bob Porter. "I remember a four-passenger, sporty type car of the general size and weight class of the Mustang being worked on in an advanced studio. In the early '60s, similar cars were developed from time to time. Everyone wanted to do one, but at the time there was really no corporate interest."
When the Mustang sold 100,000 units in the first six months, and almost half a million the first year, GM took an interest. The responsibility for GM's Mustang fighter was given to the GM Design Center's Chevrolet Studio under the direction of Henry C. Haga. Interior design was directed by George Angersbach, who had been heavily involved in the design of the Corvette, Corvair, and the Chevy II, which became the Nova in 1969. It has long been a misconception that the '67 Camaro was designed from Chevy II components when actually it was the other way around. The Chevy II was to be all new for '68, and it shared many parts with the '67 Camaro, but this did lead to compromises in the design, most notably the cowl height and hood length.
One unique feature was the decision to use a front subframe isolated with rubber 'biscuits" in combination with the unit body construction of the rest of the car, a technique that had been used on several Europeancars, including many Mercedes-Benz models. This combined the best of both worlds-a larger interior and more luggage space than was possible with a traditional frame and at the same time a quieter, smoother ride than a full uni-body car delivered.
The designers did mock-ups of many different models, including a two-seat roadster, a fastback, and a station wagon. GM was trying to keep the cost as low as possible, however, to compete with the Mustang, and decided tostick with just two models, a coupe and a convertible.
The Camaro was to be offered with a wide variety of powerplants, ranging from a 230 cubic inch six cylinder to a 327 V8.
El Camino There was always a demand for trucks with the comfort of a passenger car, or a passenger car with the load capacity of a truck. In response to this demand, Ford released the Ranchero in 1957. To compete with Ford’s Ranchero, Chevrolet created the El Camino, whose first release occurred in 1959. Over the years, Chevy has made several modifications to the El Camino to improve performance and style.
The corvette was first introduced in January 1953. To experiment with the car, they only made 300 cars, which were all made by hand and powered by a 235-cubic-inch 6-cylinder engine. The corvette was designed to show the world that General Motors could make a sports car that was a stylish two seater. All 1953 corvettes were polo white with red interiors. The engine of the car generated 150 horsepower and had a 2-speed power glide automatic transmission. Researchers have found that the first corvette has been known to go over 150 miles per hour.
When the word Mustang comes to play, most people think of a very well known car, not only for its stylish aspects, but for a variety of reasons: cost, features, speed (probably best know fact), and all around good appeal. The Ford Mustang was designed to be a people car. In 1960 Ford engineers sought out to build a car that the average motor head would be able to afford but yet still have the edgy feel about it. Back at the time of its release, in the early 1960's, the Mustang did hold the advantage over General Motors. General Motors had no car out at the time of the Mustang's release to compete with it. As the years progressed, Ford and Chevrolet managed to out do one another with there monster creations of each car. One such creation by Ford is their 590 HP "Super Stallion." The car features a 590 HP engine which burns alcohol instead of regular pump gas. Jack Keebler noted from Motor Trend Magazine, "The way to a fast time is to launch this pony at no more than 1,600 RPM, gently feeding in the throttle as the big 265/40/ZR18 Goodyear's churn at the edge of traction. An event that change Louis life was that he crashed, this might make him feel worried for not knowing if he was going to be alright. Some obstacles that he overcomes was that he was hurt because of the accident and his mechanic was killed. The Chevrolet Chevelle SSs' earliest engine in 1964 didn't perform as well as the later models. It had a 327 V8 engine which wasn't even close to as powerful as the later models. After a slow start, the 1965 Chevelle became a real muscle car. The car now had a lot more power since it had a 396 V8 engine, also known as the Z-16 package. Some famous examples of two seat sport cars include the Chevrolet Corvette or the Ford Thunderbird. One of the most famous subsections of muscle cars however is the pony car; a vehicle that is similar to the muscle car, except for the fact that it usually has a smaller and lighter chassis. Some famous examples of pony cars include the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, AMC AMX, Dodge Challenger, Mercury Cougar, Plymouth Barracuda, Pontiac Firebird, and many more. However, what all of these vehicles had in common was their significant impact on American society past and present.

Only a year or so later did Ford start making Model A’s.

This is mostly due to the fact that the company’s founder believed that the best way to compete against Ford was to offer a large, diverse group of vehicles (Ferrell and Hartline, 2014). Chevy offers seven cars, four SUVs/crossovers, four trucks/vans, and one electric vehicle (Ferrell and Hartline, 2014). There is the Corvette and the Camaro to those buyers who can afford and desire a sports car (Ferrell and Hartline, 2014). Also offered is the Impala and the Cruze for those who want a family car while getting good fuel efficiency and being safe (Ferrell and Hartline, 2014).
