In this assignment I am going to use the content analysis to research how was Volkswagen emissions scandal in 2015 reported in the International Press. First, I will start this assignment from introducing what content analysis is and discuss it is more qualitative, quantitative or use both of these two, also I will talk about the benefits and drawbacks of content analysis. Secondly, I will discuss how I collect the news like which term I used to search news and how I analysis these news and talk about the ethical approval of this project. Finally, I will present about my findings and give a reflection about my content analysis like how I can improve my content analysis.
First, I will introduce the method I am using in this assignment that is content analysis. Content analysis is “ the systematic analysis of the content of a text in a quantitative or qualitative manner” (Bhattacherjee, 2012, page115). In our lecture of MS7400 we know that content analysis is one research method that always used in the social science, it is one way of measuring things, in addition it asks questions to texts instead of asking people, also it is one way to find truths in the world (Mendes, 2015). Content analysis is one tool and technique that to analysis texts objectively and systematically. It is very close to the mass media like newspapers, television, etc. Because it is one way to get objective data from these also it is one method that shows the sheer scale of these media (Rose, 2012). For the coding scheme first I asked these questions and then I made a sheet that list every article and their information (coding sheet) and I list all the answers to these questions (coding key).
Over recent years high profile cases have brought to the forefront, questions of ethics in journalism. The purpose of this thesis will be to investigate the significance and context of a past case in which a journalist and news organization engaged in questionable operations to report the news. The issue being discussed is the considerable attention gained by the local media for the negative role they played in the Sept 27th 1990 “Henry's Publick House” incident. This thesis will address ethical questions within journalism from the viewpoint of the news organization of this case study and their breach in ethics.
Sports Utility Vehicles have long maintained the reputation of being gas guzzlers and detrimental to the environment. In the article, “Why Environmentalists Attack the SUV,” Mr. John Bragg presents the argument that the SUV is a symbol of Americanism. While it is easy to understand his thinking, it is largely based upon subjective reasoning. Conversely, the SUV.org article, “Environmental Double Standards for Sport Utility Vehicles,” postulates that SUV’s represent a paradox to consumers. Additionally, cartoonist, Khalil Bendib takes a drastic approach by overtly stating that American automotive corporations are directly contributing to the degradation of the environment.
Law and Order: SVU (Special Victims Unit) and Bones were the two shows I decided to watch for analyzing content. The reason more than one show was picked was because I wanted a little variety in the information and data I was receiving. Different shows are going to provide different information and provide different data. These two shows covered a wide spectrum of crime shows and would be helpful in providing variety in the data collection process. My topic of choice was gender and how gender roles are portrayed in these television shows. I chose Law and Order: SVU and Bones because they portray two very different versions of crime shows. Law and Order: SVU is a crime show that shows the police side of the crime process. This show deals specifically with the arrest, fact-finding process, and trial process of a crime. It does not deal with the scientific aspect of determining how victims were killed or hurt. Bones in contrast, is not entirely focused on the arrest and trial process but more specifically focuses on the scientific and anthropological aspect of determining facts in a crime scenario. Although the show does have some of the police actions involved, its main focus is on science. In conjunction with this idea, I find these two shows the most enjoyable to watch and was curious about how they portrayed gender roles. The question was whether they would be similar or not.
Thematic analysis is espoused to be the foundational approach to qualitative analysis and methods (Saunders et al., 2016 as stated in Braun and Clarke, 2006: 78) and it is a useful method used to identify and analyse the order and patterns of qualitative data (Attride-Stirling, 2001). Qualitative research method depicts the correlation that exists between data and events, creating the pictorial representation of what one thinks a given data says (Saunders et al., 2016). They also opined that, qualitative data analysis is cogent, interactive and iterative. Also, Joana and Jill (2011) and Saunders et al (2016) postulate that, qualitative research brings meanings from words and images as opposed to numbers. However, despite its robustness and rigour of its application, it is skewed more to the interpretivist ideologies since researchers draw conclusion from participants and the hypothesis being forecasted (Joana and Jill, 2011; Saunders et al., 2016).
The aim of this paper is to explore and critically analysing two research articles. The critical analysis will explain the importance of the study, evaluate design and research method used in those articles. To identify any gaps it will provide the literature review in those researches and possibility for the new study. The project plan, for the possible research will be developed on a potential gaps and the essay will finish with the conclusion.

In the Fall of 2015, Volkswagen was accused and found guilty of cheating on emissions tests that were put in place by the United States government in order to regulate the amount of harmful gases released when driving vehicles. In the aftermath of the scandal, their CEO Martin Winterkorn was replaced by Matthias Muller who found himself in need of drastically changing the corporate culture in order for VW to once again be a reputable automobile manufacturer. In order to understand why the scandal occurred in the first place an analysis of the historical culture that had dominated the company until recently. Volkswagen was established by the Nazi’s with help from Ferdinand Porsche and the majority of the company continues to be held by his descendants. Nazi Germany is infamously known to have been extremely authoritarian with orders being strictly followed coupled with a unparalleled sense of self-righteousness. In 2014, researchers from West Virginia found out that recent models of Volkswagen vehicles were emitting up to 40 times the allowed levels of nitrogen oxides (2). These vehicles had a special software that would determine when the vehicle was in laboratory testing conditions, and the software would then alter the vehicle 's functionality to emit the legal amount of nitrogen oxides allowed by the EPA. The software was found in around half a million vehicles in the United States. In addition to the bad publicity, the Volkswagen scandal will cost the company at least $15.3 billion dollars in compensation to the owners of the affected vehicles (3). In 2016, Volkswagen engineer James Liang pleaded guilty for being a crucial part in developing the illegal software (3). The software was created because Volkswagen was unable to meet the rigorous EPA emission standards. Therefore, a small team of engineers including James Liang decided to cheat the emission exams to allow Volkswagen vehicles to be sold in the U.S.
By the reading of it, Volkswagen management expressed what seemed like genuine shock when the EPA and California’s Air Resources Board revealed their joint findings regarding the automaker’s manipulation of US emissions testing for diesel cars outfitted with a particular 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine.
In conclusion, while selecting articles to use for this research, these particular articles proved to be very useful. They both met the criterion for the purpose of research information, as well as having current information on the topics.
This research falls in the category of qualitative research which the research findings is examined by the qualitative factors. At the final stage, the solutions & recommendations are derived base on the analysis. The research approach adapts the qualitative research methodology in the form of literature review and case study research as the main component of methodology. Findings from both main components are then analysed via qualitative assessment.
After having gone through the process of completing a content analysis assignment, there are a number of things I have learned throughout the experience. First, I discovered that it can be difficult in some instances to find the correct documents (in this case newspaper articles) needed to complete the content analysis procedure. Even though we as a class were given specific directions on how and where to find the desired articles, I still had difficulty gaining access to news articles from The Wall Street Journal due to the need for a subscription. I eventually did find access to relevant articles, but I did not find them in the way that was outlined in class. In a true, academic content analysis research study, I would have to follow exactly what the coding scheme says in order to get accurate and consistent results.
In the current scenario of global news media, the Cable News Network (CNN), British Broadcasting Company (BBC), Al Jazeera currently dominate the share of TV news viewers around the world. In this particular research paper, Al Jazeera is taken as a case study with reference to the content analysis of the show Talk to Al Jazeera.
In the document, Media transformation, Ownership and Diversity, the ANC criticises the South African media’s self-regulatory model. The fact that the media are first and foremost corporations is incredibly important. Following the recent decline in print media consumption, journalistic standards have dropped following budget cuts by the corporations. (Duncan, 2014, p. 170) Because of the former self-regulatory model, the ANC were concerned that journalists would not call each other out on lapses of ethical conduct.
