Assignment 5: Reflection Paper on understanding the conflict cycle in managing extreme behavior of special needs students. Special needs students often demonstrate a higher degree of behavioral issues and as such require additional effort to ensure that they are supported and given conflict- resolution skills and coping mechanisms. Understanding and breaking the conflict cycle is a key concept that can be used in schools to manage extreme behaviors that special needs children carry with them and others. The conflict cycle starts off with a stress event that triggers a negative or irrational belief. The beliefs triggers feel of anxieties that manifest unto inappropriate behavior. Teachers can learn how to control their instinct to respond aggressively and recognizes the triggers. The key is to remain calm and professional and help the student to deescalate. To bring this cycle into my school there needs to be a strategic plan for implementation, feedback and support. Teachers can learn about the concept of the conflict cycle in an initial professional development workshop however this alone will have little to no effect. To ensure that teachers are equipped to handle behavioral issues there need other activities such as case studies, role playing and model videos. These activities can help teachers to be conscious and reflective in the process. Once teachers have been given a set of strategies they will be observed in the classroom by administrators or peer teachers to collect data. The data will help the teachers to see where they excelled and where have room for improvement. The data should be given to teachers and a conversation can be initiated on what worked and what did not. Administrators should refrain from analyzing the data and coming to a conclusion on their own as it can be met with resistance and defense. This is a new skill for teachers as well hence proper care must be taken to be support teacher and not be judgmental. Monthly meetings can be set up to facilitate sharing of new strategies and
