The Complexity of Muscles The human muscular system, like any other system in the human body, is very complex. All the moving parts (anatomy), and how they work together to perform specific actions (physiology). There is so much that can be done to help the muscles in your body perform strenuous activities before fatigue, before your muscles run out of the fuel required to continue to perform movements. The biggest question most young adults want to know is, how do you get bigger muscles? Or, why do I cramp during workouts? All these and more can be answers through the understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human muscular system. First let’s go over four very important factors of the human muscular system. First being the primary function of the muscular system is movement for the body. The nervous system communicates with the muscular system, resulting in movement. Second is the five major properties of the muscular system beginning with 1) our muscle being excitable or irritable. 2) Our muscles are contractible. 3) Our muscles are extensible. 4) Our muscles have elasticity. 5) Last, our muscle system is adaptable. Third, there are five types of muscle movements. 1) Adduction, movement towards the body. 2) Abduction, movement away from the body. 3) Flexion, “movement in the anterior-posterior plane that reduces the angle between the articulating elements.” (Martini, F 230). 4) Extension, “occurs in the same plane as flexion, but it increases the angle between articulating elements.” (Martini, F 230). 5) Last is rotation. As we have learned through our reading, most all bodies skeletal muscles are made up of primarily three types of skeletal muscle fibers, but their proportion differs depending on what action the muscles is doing. For example, type I fibers such as muscles of the neck, back, and leg have a higher proportion. According to Quinn (2014), type I muscles are slower and more effective, they tend fire a lot slower than fast twitch fibers and they fatigue at a much slower rate. Hence, slower twitch fibers are pronounced at helping athletes run marathons and bicycle for hours. Shoulder and arm muscles are not always active but are intermittent in their use; these muscles tend to have a larger amount of tension for uses in throwing and lifting. These muscles have a combination of both type I and type II B fibers. These fast twitch fibers use anaerobic metabolism to create energy and are the "classic" fast twitch muscle fibers that excel at producing quick, powerful bursts of speed. These muscles are used in events such as 100m sprint, basketball, soccer and football. Since this muscle fiber fires at such a high rate of contraction it will fatigue much faster and will not last long before needing to rest.

The three types of muscle cells are cardiac, skeletal, and smooth. Cardiac muscles are only found in and near the heart. They push blood through the heart, and are involuntary (not controlled by the nervous system). Skeletal muscles are attached to the tendons and bones. They stabilize joints, help with posture, and power voluntary movement. Smooth muscles are found in organs. They work together to move substance like food through the body, and are involuntary. Muscles use proteins called actin and myosin to move. Calcium ions bond actin and pull it apart, which opens a place for myosin will bond. Actin and myosin push and pull against each other, which causes the expanding and contracting.
As you can see by the diagram, the muscles cover the entire body as does the integumentary system. They are responsible for movement. They are attached to the bones (skeletal system) and there are nearly 700 different ones. Each is made up of the muscle tissue, blood vessels, tendons and nerves. Each has a specific purpose. For example, the leg muscles assist in moving and bending the legs. The muscles make up nearly half of a person’s total body weight.

However, when working out to building muscle, one needs to consume healthy foods and more proteins. When I was in grade 9, I started to lift weight and I was new to it. After a few days of working out my body was experiencing any change. I realized that the reason my body was not experiencing change is because of what I was eating. I was not eating much protein and healthy foods. Later I started to eat foods that contain high protein and then I started to experience change, my muscles were getting bigger and stronger. Foods that contain high in protein can help to build muscles such as cottage cheese, chicken breast, whole eggs, canned tuna, etc. So therefore, having enough protein is the main key in order to build
