There were two empires, their strength and influence unparalleled. During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, Spain and England dominated all other countries due to their willingness to explore the unknown. These two nations created a legacy and changed the world forever, bringing about new lands, resources, and people. The early explorations of Spain and England were led by similar driving motivations and spreading of religious beliefs, however, the outcomes of each country’s presence in the New World varied.
Between the years 1450 and 1600, the population of Western Europe increased at a dramatic rate. This being said, the number of land entitled citizens outnumbered the available land remaining. This extreme case of overpopulation forced the government leaders and aristocracy to look into the idea of expanding outside of Europe. England was especially affected by this mass amount of overpopulation, seeing that they were already struggling with the amount of people verses the lack of land vacant.

Because of the country’s colonial expansions, Spain became a powerful empire that few dared to challenge. Spanish conquistadores attacked the South American natives with such force and power, leaving them to take whatever they wanted from the conquered peoples. All of the treasure and land that had once belonged to the Aztecs, was commandeered and given to the Spanish monarchy. Much of the indigenous records of the Aztec people were destroyed because the explorers believed that it was the work of the devil. This text was created to bring to light the hardship Natives went through during the Age of Exploration. The populous, who only hear rumors and short stories from all territories west of the Atlantic Ocean, cannot grasp the tough and difficult task that is at hand in the Americas. From these short blurbs of what is said about the west, they make inferences of what it is like, and how it is possible for another land mass to be unknown to many for so long. But for those who do know what is past the Atlantic, know that this Agenda of the King and Queen must be fulfilled and to do so would be to claim land for Spain for it to be settled upon. On top of that is to further collect the riches of the Americas to benefit Spain in the conquest of the Americas.
The English victory over the Spanish Armada marked the beginning of the British naval dominance in the Atlantic. England and Spain had been enjoying a peaceful relationship throughout the early 15th century. However, the relations turned sour after the Spanish backstabbed an English fleet, led by a British sailor named Francis Drake at the Spanish port of San Juan de Ulua in 1568. The Spanish defeat of the Aztecs has been extensively criticized for many years. Religion was a motive for discovery, enabled the Spanish to enter the heart of the empire, and was used as justification for torture of the natives. The centrality of religion as a force in Spanish conquest is undeniable. The history of the Western hemisphere is full of war and conquest. One of the most significant and defining of those conquests is the downfall of the Mexica/Aztec Empire. While there are many other events to choose from, this one stands out since it was one over one of the largest empires in Central America. It is also important to look at because of the immense cultural impact it had. The story of this takeover reads like a movie script, a small band of Spaniards single handedly takes down the most powerful empire in Central America. It was an epic battle, which unfortunately led to the destruction of a magnificent culture. As in any major historical event there are many underlying themes and storylines that come together to make the event happen. The Spanish conquest of the Aztec is no different. Three major themes are seen in this struggle. One of them is the incredible advantage that the Spaniards technology gave them over the Aztecs. A second major theme is the greed that fueled the conquests in the New World. The last major theme was the effect of the political divisions and rivalries within Montezuma’s Central American Kingdom. As this historical event progressed each one of these themes began to intertwine until they became an almost unstoppable force.

Many people have heard of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. However, only some know of all the things they accomplished. They might be best known for funding the voyages of Christopher Columbus, but they also greatly contributed to the unity of Spain (“Isabella l”). Together, they brought many kingdoms on the Iberian Peninsula together to form what Spain is today. Through Spain’s unification, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella strengthened Spain into an economic and dominant world power, enabling the spread of Christianity and the colonization of a New World.
