Vampires and vampire stories of one form or another have been around since the beginning of recorded history. That said, the classic style of vampire, the evil yet charming, wealthy, bloodsucking monster that we all know, really only became a part of our culture with the introduction of Dracula. Since then, vamps have been all the rage. But every generation has a slightly different style of vampires. Why is that? Simply put, the style of vampires in each generation is a manifestation of that generation’s impressions on who and what makes a villain or a criminal. This can be proven with a comparison of movies centering on teenaged vampires, Twilight (2008) and The Lost Boys (1987). Vegetarianism only became popular recently, after an endorsement from the American Diabetic Association. There are now tons of vegetarians and vegans, and so the vampires of Twilight are “vegetarian.” Sparkly skin is now becoming more popular with the younger generation because glitter makeup is in style, thus, sparkly vampires. Having a character combust in sunlight isn’t conducive to a romance story, and so the Cullens and their kin are immune to the sun. Daytime equates to safety and happiness, whereas darkness is traditionally used for horror stories, and the original target audience of Twilight is prepubescent girls as young as 12… by and large, they’re kids who don’t want to be scared. In The Lost Boys, there are quite a few nighttime scenes. Many are filmed in a cave. There is extreme violence and killing. It is geared towards teenagers who wanted to be scared. The stories each cater to their audience, and so do their vampires. The vampires of each generation are a direct manifestation of what they perceive to be a villain.
