From 1861 to 1865 America was in a Civil War. The War was between the Confederacy and the Union and they were fighting over slavery. The Confederacy was made up of eleven states which who were fighting against the Union to have the right to still own slaves in the south. Once the confederates broke off from America they were known as the Confederate States of America. The rest of the other states where with the north and they were known as the Union. Once Lincoln was elected to be president without carrying a single southern State, many southern white leaders felt it was there only choice for the southern states to separate from America to become the Confederate States of America. Also they felt that they losing representation to promote pro-slavery acts and policies that they were able to promote before Abraham Lincoln was elected to be the President of America. After this Abraham Lincoln declared the acts of the Confederacy to be Illegal. He asked congress for 500,000 soldiers to crush what he thought to be an aggressive rebellion. On April 1861 the war between each of these sides started, more than 600,000 people were killed and millions were wounded during the four years of this war. A lot of violent battles happened in the south. Also Union almost collapsed by the Confederate forces which could have changed the outcome of war. The outcome of this war would determine what type of nation America would become.

This proclamation freed all the slaves within the ten states that were still in rebellion because of the war. Also this proclamation allowed the free slaves to join the United States service to help fight in the Civil war. There was an estimate of three to four million slaves that this proclamation applied. After the war the U.S started reconstruction in south first by ending slavery around the United States. Also there were changes to the Constitution that still remain in effect to this day after the end of Civil War. These changes to the constitution allowed the reuniting of north and south, guaranteed form of government for the ex-confederate states, and it permanently end slavery around the United States. This war change the way determined the outcome of how America would be; also thanks to this war slavery no longer exist in America.

After the Civil War, America went through a period of Reconstruction. This was when former Confederate states were readmitted to the Union. Lincoln had a plan that would allow them to come back, but they wouldn’t be able to do it easily. He would make 10% of the population swear an oath of loyalty and establish a government to be recognized. However, he was assassinated in Ford’s Theater and Andrew Johnson became the president; Johnson provided an easy path for Southerners. Congress did their best to ensure equal rights to freedmen, but failed because of groups who were against Reconstruction, white southern Democrats gaining control within the government and the lack of having a plan in place for recently freedmen.
In the spring 1861, years of building tensions between the northern states and southern states resulted in the American Civil War. In 1680 an anti-slavery Republican, Abraham Lincoln was elected president causing seven southern states to secede from the union. These seven states included--Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas--. These seven states formed the Confederate States of America. The American Civil War lasted from April 12, 1861 to May 9, 1865 and claimed more than roughly 620,000 lives. So what caused the Civil War? Southern and Northern People had different ideas about the civil war. There were problems within their country and they wanted to fix them. They knew the country was created for the people and was run by the people. They wanted the nation to succeed, but one side wanted it to be free for all people no matter the race, while the southern wanted to keep slaves. With these complete opposites ideas of thinking the southern states decided their only option was to separate from the Union. They split and this left the country confused. Confused about what was in store for the nation they had grown to love. It was no longer clear what they future held for American and it would take a couple of years to get the country moving down the path that leads to the world we live in today.

When the Civil War was approaching its third year, United States President Abraham Lincoln was able to make the slaves that were in Confederate states that were still in rebellion against the Union forever free. Document A states that on January 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation and that every enslaved person residing in the states that were “In rebellion against the United States” were free and that the Executive Government of the United States and that the military and naval authority were to recognize them and could not act against them at all. Although the Proclamation did not free every slave in the Confederacy, it was able to release about 3.5 million slaves. Along with freeing all of those slaves, it also stated that African American men were allowed to enlist with the Union and aid them in the war.
The Civil War marked a defining moment in United States history. Long simmering sectional tensions reached critical when eleven slaveholding states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. Political disagreement gave way to war as the Confederates insisted they had the right to leave the Union, while the loyal states refused to allow them to go. Four years of fighting claimed almost 1.5 million casualties, resulting in a Union victory. Even though the North won the war, they did a horrible job in trying to win the peace, or in other words, the Reconstruction era. Rather than eliminating slavery in the South, the Southerners had a new form of slavery, which was run by a new set of codes called "Black Codes”. With the help of President Johnson, the South continued their plantations, in essence becoming exactly what they were before the war. Overall, the South won Reconstruction because in the end they got slavery (without the name), they got an easy pass back into the Union, and things reverted back to the way they had been prior the war.

The Civil War has been viewed as the unavoidable eruption of a conflict that had been simmering for decades between the industrial North and the agricultural South. Roark et al. (p. 507) speak of the two regions’ respective “labor systems,” which in the eyes of both contemporaries were the most salient evidence of two irreconcilable worldviews. Yet the economies of the two regions were complementary to some extent, in terms of the exchange of goods and capital; the Civil War did not arise because of economic competition between the North and South over markets, for instance.
