In The City of Ember, irony occurs throughout the novel.
For example, the mayor steals food and supplies from the citizens of Ember.
Doon declares, “‘The mayor has a secret treasure room in the pipeworks’” (158).
Doon discovers the mayer hoarding supplies and food from the storeroom. Doon and Lina go to the assistant guard and tell him about the mayor but they don't know that the guards get food from the mayor, along with Looper.
The city needs their mayor to help the city, but he’s too selfish and greedy.
The Giver teaches us that love is important.
For example, The Giver transfers memory of love when Jonas saves Gabe by taking him with him to find Elsewhere.
“‘When will he be released?’ ‘First thing tomorrow morning…’” “And he had
What are memories to you? In the book The Giver, by Lois Lowry. There is a boy his name is Jonas. He is the Receiver of Memories. Jonas experiences the memories over the course of the book. Memories help us understand there are consequences to your actions. Although some readers may believe that memories are not important. The memories Jonas had helped him with the journey at the end of the book.
The Community keeps the memories away from the people, which means that they ignore their past, and cannot gain wisdom or bliss. For example, when the Giver was explaining what memories are to Jonas, he says, “There’s much more… I re-experience them again and again. It is how wisdom comes. And how we shape our future,”(Lowry 78). The Giver describes how wisdom comes in this quote.
The book the and the movie City of Ember are great with lots of emotion and excitement. Jeanne Duprau is the author of the book, were comparing and contrasting the book the City of Ember and the movie the City of Ember. The book is about the main characters Lina and Doon that are 12 years old and want to find an exit out of Ember. The City of Ember is underground the world with lights everywhere so they can see and sometimes the lights go out and everyone worries they will not come back on. The City of Ember has many similarities and differences between the novel and the film; however the film was a more entertaining experience.
The mayor, a figure supposed to lead and help the city, abuses his power accepts bribes of food from Looper, and eventually makes the decision to live out his days in a small room stacked with food until he dies: “ ‘The mayor has a secret treasure room in the pipeworks.(158)” Because Doon works in the pipeworks, he discovers Mayor Cole’s refuge full of goods from Looper in Tunnel 351, and eventually reports it to the guards. Soon, there is a search out for Doon and Lina, for “spreading vicious rumors.”
The term The Giver refers to the old man, the former receiver who transfers all his memories to Jonas. The names giver and receiver remind us that memories are meant to be shared, the function of the old man is not holding memories but passing them from one person to another. That is why the title is not memory keepers' .The old man becomes the giver as Jonas becomes the receiver. Jonas also becomes the giver when he transfers his memories to Gabriel. But more interestingly, Jonas becomes the giver when he gives his memories to Gabriel (Booker10).
Jonas decides to leave and change the lives of his people so that they can experience the truth. “The Giver rubbed Jonas’s hunched shoulders… We’ll make a plan” (155). Their plan involves leaving sameness and heading to Elsewhere, where Jonas knows the memories can be released to the people. He has a connection with Gabe, a special child who has experienced the memories, unlike the rest of the community. Jonas has a strong love for Gabe, and he longs to give him a better life. “We’re almost there, Gabriel” (178). Even with a sprained ankle, Jonas keeps pushing forward because he wants everyone to experience what The Giver has given him. He wants them to have a life where the truth is exposed. His determination allows him to make a change for a greater future in his community. This proves that Jonas has the strength to change his community for the
In the Pipeworks, Doon found other things that were interesting but not important. He found many stuff were on the ground. Such as a pair of pliers, a coin, some box of plugs and washers and a box of shriveled bits of foods were in a supply closet. The other thing that Doon found was interesting but not important was a supply closet, it was at the far south end of the
Within society, there are certain standards of behavior and expectations that one must be expected to comply by, and failure to do so can result in critical and discouraging prejudice. This unrelenting and derogatory hatred can often cause dire reactions, such as a loss of morale and self-confidence, demonstrated significantly in The Fall of a City, by Alden Nowlan. In the story, Teddy, an eleven year old boy, is mocked at by his uncle for occupying himself with paper dolls, failing to meet society’s standards of maturity that a boy of his age is expected to abide by. As a result of his uncle’s mockery, Teddy’s passion and fondness of his imaginary world disappears, and in a fit of rage and anger, he demolishes his paper world. Teddy’s destruction
In the science-fiction dystopian novel The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau, the protagonist Lina Mayfleet is described as inquisitive by the author. Many sections in the book show Lina's inquisitiveness. For example, Lina knows that "The Gathering Hall was the only building in Ember with three stories. [Lina] had always wanted to stand on its roof and look out at the city" (36). Jeanne DuPrau uses Lina’s feelings to convey that she is inquisitive. She describes this by how Lina "wants" to look out at the city. This feeling shows us that Lina is inquisitive about the world around her. Another example of Lina’s inquisitiveness is when Lina and Doon are in the Pipeworks, trying to find what the door in Tunnel 351 is about. They hear “another sound:
The City of Ember originated as a fantasy book that follows Lina and Doon as they have the adventure of a lifetime. The book, originally published in 2003, continued to rise in popularity. Eventually, The City of Ember became a movie in 2008. The book and the movie have significant similarities and differences.
One example of this theme is when the Giver transfers the memory of war to Jonas. He receives pain. After he receives the memory, “Jonas did not want to go back. He didn’t want the memories, didn't want the horror, didn’t want the wisdom, didn’t want the pain. He wanted his childhood again, his scraped knees and ball games”(121). In this quote, Jonas has been given an unpleasant memory. He is on the battlefield and there are dead horses and men; he is in tremendous pain. Jonas wants to go back to his life before they choose him to be the receiver of memory. At the same time, Jonas knows about the goodness of memories, and wants to spread that with everybody. The only way
Jonas said “I gave him memories along the way to let him survive, but he’s cold.” The giver had started to give Jonas and Gabe memories to keep them warm and alive. Jonas felt the memory of him sitting next to a campfire and it was as hot as a hot bathing room in the house of the old. Jonas had remembered about his friends Fiona and Asher and asked the giver. “Where is Fiona and Asher.”
could be a strong reason for most of the citizens to fight the city hall and the officials in the
This city has the right idea, and even though we ourselves as one person can not do anything of this magnitude, we can always request and support the city when opportunities like this arise. Aside from these large scale efforts, all we have to do is lend a smile or a small helping hand. Our communities would be safer and more pleasant to be in, if only we took the effort to lend a helping hand. If a normal man was in the ratty old shoes of a poor man for just a day, he would expect no less.
In this paper, I will argue that the ideal political leaders would like to lead the city from their innate drive.
