The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier In the novel the chocolate war Robert Cormier (the composer) has

created real people involved in situations and conveying the themes of

bullying, manipulation, cruelty, power, disturbance and victimization.

Brother Leon is an evil person and very manipulative using black mail.

Jerry Renault is a victim of manipulation. Brother Leon and Archie

Costello, who is as much a manipulative person as brother Leon. Are

very disturbing characters who relate well to the theme. There are

many language features used which helps the composer state meaning of

what the novel is trying to compose. The structure is very different

to usual novels; it has a very interesting manner about the way the

book is written. We explore themes in a novel through the experience

of the characters.
