My interest for The Chinese pangolin started when I watched The Wild Kratts on PBS kids. I would always ask my mother if we could go to the zoo to see them. When we would go to the Zoo I would never see them, so I would ask a zookeeper why there were no Chinese at the zoo? I was surprised to find that there were eight species of Chinese pangolin and that they were extremely endangered. One of the threats to Chinese pangolin is being poached for their scales which are used in medicine. Another threat to the Chinese pangolins is that they are hunted for their meat and eaten as a high-end cuisine. They also have interesting facts about their tongues. “A Chinese pangolins tongue is attached near its pelvis and last pair of ribs, and when fully extended is longer than the animal’s head and body” (Claridge 801). The Chinese pangolins stomach is muscular and has a spine made of keratin to project its interior, it mashes and grinds prey (Dickman 86). “[Chinese] pangolin limbs are stout and well adapted for digging” (Dickman 86). Each paw has five toes, and their forefeet have three long and curved claws used to demolish the nests of termites and ants (Dickman 86). They also use their claws to dig nesting’s and sleeping burrows (Dickman 86). “They can run surprisingly fast, and will often rise on their hind limbs to sniff the air” (Dickman 86). Chinese Pangolins can also swim. Chinese pangolin can also have very intense mating seasons (Heath 3). “In late summer or early autumn, male Chinese pangolins may be observed fighting over the opportunity to mate with a female, resulting in the victor and female mating over a period of three to five days” (Heath 3).
