The two terms cultural imperialism and cultural nationalism have played a huge role in the foundation of many countries. These two phenomena are entirely different, but have gone hand in hand for many years. Although imperialism and nationalism were created once upon a time ago, they are still very significant around the globe to this day.
Cultural imperialism is defined as “a culture of a large and powerful country, organization, etc. having a great influence on another less powerful country." When speaking about cultural imperialism, it is important to know the back story of it and how significant it is today. The actual definition of cultural nationalism is a form of nationalism in which the nation is defined by a shared culture. It is an intermediate position between ethnic nationalism on one hand and liberal nationalism on the other. Cultural nationalism is also used by historians when speaking about different affinities, experiences, or practices that serve as the basis for common political views, such as what may unite individuals based on common language, and ethnic identity- even literary and musical tastes, dramatic films, cuisine etc. Johann Gottfried Herder is recognized as the greatest individual who was responsible for exposing the ideology and practice of cultural nationalism. “Herder presented the nation as the primordial scene from which the best of human endeavor owed its provenance, and which therefore obliged its cultivation through the recovery and celebration of its history and culture” (Eric Taylor Woods). He eventually studied cultural nationalism to the point that he was known as a very important part of cultural nationalism in the 19th century. Syria is the only Middle East regime allied with Iran and imperialist strategists have discussed the possibility of the influence of Iran stretching through Iraq, Syria and Lebanon to the Mediterranean. Therefore, the U.S. and its allies see overthrowing Assad as both removing trouble and isolating and weakening the Islamic Republic of Iran. Along with this, the lack of resources in Syria also caused problems. Since Syria is not very rich and is incredibly overcrowded, this also leads to more issues. Cultural nationalism did in fact help the Syrians gain their rightfully earned independence. By having cultural nationalism, it gave them a calming mechanism for years to come.
Cultural imperialism and cultural nationalism have helped countries grow from as early as the 19th century to today, and both are equally important for a country to have. Although having pride in your country and exerting power over another may become too much at times, without one another, the country would not flourish the way it
