According to ADP 6-0, leadership is defined as the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization. In accordance with ADP 6-22, a good leader is required to be intelligent, competent, physically and mentally tough leaders of character. As a cadet and a future officer in the Army, it is crucial that I possess these traits, and I believe I do. I feel that I possess a lot of the necessary traits to be a good leader. I know my strengths and weaknesses and can identify them in my subordinates, peers, and my superiors. I try to develop others, not just those below me but also above. I am also a good multitasker and can balance my official duties with my personal ones. In the following paragraphs I will provide examples of how I possess these qualities and why they are so important to being a good leader in the army. Being able to identify your own strengths and weakness is always necessary when in any form of leadership position. As a human, I know that I am not perfect nor will I ever be, but being able to identify to myself my strengths and weaknesses, especially my weaknesses, will help me better myself. This goes hand-in-hand with being able to identify one’s strengths and weaknesses. There is always something that we can improve on as people and as soldiers. As a leader it is my job to foster a positive environment for myself and for my subordinates. They should all know that I want the best for them and that I will put in the effort needed for them to attain their goals, both personal and military related.
