The Challenge of Being a Woman
In the eyes of the reader, Lämmchen was the optimistic wife of the main protagonist and as a woman in society struggling. When trouble arises in society or even between her and her husband, Lämmchen tries remaining claim and firm about the situation. Even though there are times when Lämmchen had panicked over the situation throughout Hans Fallada’s novel Little Man What Now, Lämmchen is determined to find an alternative solution. Even if Lämmchen tried being optimistic about her new life, she is struggled being a new wife, a new daughter, a new mother, and view as the new woman. All at once, Lämmchen had become a new wife, mother, and daughter; at first it seems like a new adjustment Lämmchen had to make for the sake of her unborn baby. However, the adjustment had hit her harder as the German economy deteriorated and the inflation had turn into a hyperinflation (Weitz 134). Lämmchen’s mentality is of traditional values whereas her physical actions are of the new woman values. Her actions as the new woman were becoming pregnant before getting married (Fallada 7), had a source of income and personal saving (Fallada 21-22), unable to do womanly chores (Fallada 64) and later becoming main provider of the family. However, her mentality values allowed her to be the traditional woman, such as caring for the wellbeing of her husband, cooking for him (Fallada 64), and caring for her Shrimp after her birth. Gluckel's memoir enables a reader to gain an understanding of what a widowed Jewish woman would face in Christian dominated Germany both from a personal and public perspective throughout seventeenth and eighteenth century. Throughout her memoirs Gluckel describes the worries that a mother would have over her children, her relations with both her first and second husband while addressing the responsibilities she faced as a businesswoman. Gluckel arranged her life narrative in seven books. The first four books and the opening section of the fifth book have been written consecutively in the months or year of mourning after Haim's (her first husbands) death in 1689. The rest of Book 5 was written during the decade of the 1690's but given final form after her second marriage. The sixth book was written in 1702 or shortly afterward, during the initial shock of Hirsch Levy's (Gluckel's second husbands) bankruptcy in Metz, and the seventh and final book was composed in 1715, during her second widowhood, with a final paragraph from 1719 before her death. Gluckel has conveniently broken down her narratives in seven books, which help the reader clearly identify with individual aspects occurring in her life. In her memoirs Gluckel thoroughly encompasses a social, cultural and economical perspective about her life as a Jewish woman while contrasting it to Christian ways which dominated Germany during both 17th and 18th century.
Finally, even though, for a long time, the roles of woman in a relationship have been established to be what I already explained, we see that these two protagonists broke that conception and established new ways of behaving in them. One did it by having an affair with another man and expressing freely her sexuality and the other by breaking free from the prison her marriage represented and discovering her true self. The idea that unites the both is that, in their own way, they defied many beliefs and started a new way of thinking and a new perception of life, love and relationships.

Also as feminism, is an ideology it has various schools of which have conflicting ideas of the ‘empowerment of women’ making it difficult to clarify on what is not acceptable in establishing women’s rights. This essay will analyze the themes of sexual and class exploitations in the story “The Wife’s Resentment” by Delariviere Manley. By exploring these themes we are able to get an idea of why Manley wrote this story. That is, she hoped to make young women, whether rich or poor, aware of the value of their virtue as well as their rights as married or single women to protect that virtue or honor. By revealing the themes that are presented in the story, we can see what Manley stood for and why she wrote this story in the period she lived in.

The men treated their women as if they were an object. After marriage the husbands had full control over any finances or property that the women had once owned. Mathilde marries Mr. Loisel, a minor clerk in the Ministry of Education. She becomes unhappy with the way she has to live. "She suffered because of her grim apartment with its drab walls, threadbare furniture, ugly curtains." (paragraph 3). She owns cheap belongings and still dreams of being rich and having gourmet food while her husband likes plain things and seems rather happy for where he is in life. She dreams these wonderful and expensive things and it frustrates her. A dream come true happens but instead of being happy she is upset and even more frustrated.
The short stories “Souls Belated” and “The Yellow Wallpaper” have in common ‘Marriage’ as main theme. However, the marriage is treated quite differently in both short stories. In "Souls Belated", Lydia chooses to take control of her destiny, to deviate from conventions and to choose what is good for her. She is the strongest character of the couple.
