The cellphone has changed over the years. In 1996, the Motorola Startac was the first flip phone. 7 years later, the Sanyo Scp-5300 came out. This was the first phone with a camera. In 2006, the Nokia N73 was the immensely popular smartphone that sold millions. Phones are becoming much better over the years as technology gets better. Then the iPhone came out in 2007, which revolutionized how phones are made. This smart phone could do everything at the palm of your hand such as GPS, text messaging, YouTube, social media, etc. Technology is great for communicating with people all over the world, but it is changing our society. A full 66% of adults suffer from “Nomophobia”. Nomophobia is the fear of not being with a cellphone. Eighty percent of …show more content…
Why is this so? Dr. Chris Bjornsen from Longwood University did a study on in-class cellphone use and academic performance. He found out that as cellphone use in class goes up, test scores go down. The lower the cell phone use, the higher the grades are. In the study, the students who got low grades were using their phones for social media, checking emails, and text messaging. Students with a higher GPA used social media less than those with a lower GPA did. Dr. Bjornsen states, “If students aren’t paying attention, they’re not getting the information. An A student cant necessarily pay attention to two different things at the same time”. Students are so accustomed to these cellphones because we were born with technology. We are the digital natives. In class, many students are using their phones for YouTube or social media and tune out the lesson for the …show more content…
The cellphones are hurting our face to face interaction and social skills because we are so into the virtual world and not paying attention the real world. Without being on the phones, we can become more outgoing and encounter several activities that we may have not been able to do because were on the phones 24/7. In addition, when with friends the quality of the conversations has decreased tremendously. When eating out with friends we should put our phones in the center of the table and if someone were to check their phone they would have to pay for the food. This will help the quality of the conversation because we are not distracted and will help with social skills. To help with student’s grades, they should use their cellphones for only educational use while studying and not multitasking with distractive sites. This will improve student’s grades because students will have a better chance of paying attention to what they are doing. This is also proven by research that students who multitask less while doing homework or class lecture will do better than those who
The cell phone is an evil that is blocking the young adult from absorbing any information. The newer the cell phone, the more of a consumerist attitude the student will have. If college’s penalized students for using cell phones in class, like they are supposed to, then maybe it will crack the student and allow them to see what they are missing. Trying to find a solution to the consumerist student problem is very complex, but it does focus on the lack of students paying attention.
Cell phones are harming education and causing grades to be lower than what they could be. The other day I got out of class early in the business building, as I usually do. I was walking down the hallway, back to my dorm, as I walked across a classroom that I happened to look inside. As the professor was in the front of the classroom giving his lesson for that day, I noticed that about fifteen of twenty students had their phones out not paying one little ounce of attention to the professor. I do not know about you, but I can not read a status on Facebook and retain the information that my professor is giving me, but that is just me.
Ring! Ring! Hello. Every second billions of cell phones calls occur across the globe. Cell phones have made it so that humans can communicate with each other at ease. Since the telephone’s invention in 1876, it has made human communication easier and added to the convenience of life. Being able to talk to a person that is hundreds, or even thousands of miles away has enhanced our forms of communication. However, when the invention of the first telephone came about, it was only for the elite and required enormous and heavy equipment in order for it to be operable, thus many did not own one. Telephones became major in the 1900s; and eventually a new innovation, the cellular phone, came about in 1973, but still a handful of people did not rely on them, or care for them. The first cell phone was of considerable size and was not available for everyone until around 1992. There are close to 6.8 billion cell phone subscriptions currently and most phones are considered smart phones, cell phones that integrate email, internet, and apps on a touch screen handheld device. The volume of subscriptions of phones are rapidly growing. With the

(Luxury) Could these electronic devices that people use every day actually be hurting them in the long run? In today’s world, the answer definitely is yes. With today’s people it is all about staying up with the news and understanding minute events within the eworld of social media. However, the problem with cellular devices may be much broader than social stalking; it may also affect people’s health, the health of the environment, personal finance, and driving and learning distractions, Not only are people developing an addiction to their cellphone, using them to escape
Socializing on cell phones while trying to do homework or study, no matter what anybody says, is not the best option for the best learning environment possible. Also realize that you may not even hear a child talking on the phone. Realize, however, that children can use their cell phones for a variety of purposes that goes beyond talking such as updating their social networks such a Facebook or Twitter, text messaging, or posting photos to their same social networks.
Teachers are finding it harder and harder to separate a student from their cell phones for eight hours. Cellular devices and social media have become a number one priority for many people across the world. Due to the fact that the student will not put down their phones during school hours, their grades tend to be lower, which could, in the long run, affect their chances of getting into college. The use of cell phones does not strictly affect younger generations, it also had major influence on adults at the
Many people in today’s society rely on technology to help us with our daily lives and help us stay connected to family, friends, and other people. The advancements in today’s cell phone technology is very complex and made to be efficient for their owners, allowing them to surf the net and IM message people instantly. Cellphones in particular have developed very fast in the past 15 years. From my childhood, cell phones have evolved from the old school Nokia bricks that allowed texts, calls, and simple graphic games, to todays I-Phones that have higher computable capabilities than some computers. In the United States alone, there is an estimated population of around 297 million people, and 197 million people are subscribed to cell phone companies (Starr). With so many people in today’s society with so much power and opportunity in the palm of their hands, we shouldn’t forget that “With great power comes great responsibility” –Voltaire.
One reason that cell phones should be banned from classrooms is because students who use them fall into a daze of distracted learning. Classes are taught by teachers, whose goal is to give the student an educational experience, learning things they will need to apply to their later life. However, students on their cellphones are distracted from their learning and never use the lessons taught. Over 2,000 cellphone disturbances were reported in New York City in the past school year (Backstory). This means that over 2,000 people had issues with cellphones interrupting classroom discussi...
As time progresses, many changes develop in society. For instance, fashions change, tastes change, habits change, and norms change as well. One of the biggest changes that has taken place over the years is the increase in dependency on technology and cell phones. According to an article, dated from from 2000 to 2004, there has been a 50% increase in the use of cell phones, ranging from 40 million to 60 million (Shuvra Mahmud). That was ten years ago, so the changes now must have increased even more. Similar to the increase in cell phone usage, there has also been an increase in the belief and diagnosis of nomophobia, the fear of being without a person’s cell phone. Although some scholars have argued that nomophobia is merely a high engagement of cell phone usage, various studies suggests that nomophobia is an actual phobia and that company advertisements are a probable cause for it.

We even have portable chargers now. No one could imagine life without phones. Weather your checking twitter or texting a friend. Everyone likes to talk, listen and learn about new things. The Negative Effects of Mobile Phones Voice mobile telephony has become widespread since the 1990s. The compass of the modern people is the mobile phone. It is used for expressing movement and its direction. For a mobile phone user, moving around in the city becomes a series of spaces used for keeping contacts and taking care of things ongoing. People call from certain places to certain other people without the fixed line.
Cell phones have changed from an item of luxury to an everyday necessity for some people. Twenty five years ago, a phone was just a way to contact someone. Mobile phones have become one of the most common tools of communications for both young and old. Cellular devices have redefined relationships and social conduct, and transformed the daily lives of many individuals. Cell phones no longer function just as a communication device. Today it has many other uses. Cell phones are used for games, calculators, texting, calendars, social sites, and pictures. In addition, there are many apps that one can download on a phone. Mobile phones help us keep track of our lives.
“An 8-by-10 foot cell no human contact, no chance to see the moon or the stars or the sun, or hear the birds for years and decades? That’s torture.” (Bernstein, 2013) This quote by Keith James, a prisoner advocate, discusses what solitary confinement is like. As extreme as this may be social isolation can be minimally comparable to solitary confinement. In both cases somebody is being isolated from the outside world, the major difference being solitary confinement is forced upon a person while social isolation is a person’s choice. Even though mobile users are claiming that they are using their devices for social purposes only, scholars believe that may be beginning to cause social isolation amongst people (Omotayo, Yiefeng, and Shyam, 2008).
Mobile phones are undeniable today. Almost everybody has a mobile phone. Formerly, it only functioned as a portable mean of communication. The function of a mobile phone has developed into entertainment. Furthermore, mobile phone has also come into the schools. However, it has both positive and negative effect on students. This essay argues that mobile phones will bring more negative than positive effect for students. Of course, students use it as a mean of communication and sometimes for an emergency call if they need it. Yet, they would use their mobile phones for both bullying and cheating. Also, mobile phones will make students lost concentration during their study.
