Pausing my actions, I sit down feeling bewildered. “Am I really finding comfort out of putting this man in a wall?” I question myself, while looking towards the recess. Clearing my mind of any doubts, I continue to work. The wall is finished, and I have finally gotten my long overdue revenge. Edgar Allan Poe’s writing of “The Cask of Amontillado” is very unique compared to the literature that is written now. Many English classes make reading his stories a requirement, to help them with their deep thinking and analyzing skills. Poe is one of the best short story authors to help with challenging students abilities. Edgar Allan Poe’s use of irony and foreshadowing brings a deeper version of suspense to “The Cask of Amontillado.”

Poe’s use of irony brings an eerie feeling to the story. For example, the story says, “And I to your long life.” when Montresor and Fortunato are cheering with the wine. This would be a form of dramatic irony, because the audience knows that he would soon end up the victim of a homicide. Fortunato does not assume that anything will happen to him in the catacombs, while the audience knows exactly what is about to come. The suspense is brought out more when this is stated, because it may be interpreted in many ways based on the reader’s point of view. Edgar Allan Poe’s writing has so many different writing tricks and details that it is impossible to figure them all out. This short story is a perfect example of those traits. Poe’s story has so many good writing tricks, but the irony and foreshadowing were the most noticeable throughout the whole thing.
