The book The Cask of Amontillado is written by Edgar Allen Poe. In this book Poe makes Montresor get revenge on his friend, Fortunato. While Montresor is taking revenge Poe creates a lot of traits for both Montresor and Fortunato. Some of the traits for Montresor are that he is a clever, precise, and very cautious man. As this book goes on, these are some of the things realized about Montresor’s traits. As the book went Montresor was always cautious about this plan. As Montresor and Fortunato talked, “Come let us go. Whither? To your vaults. My friend, I will not impose upon your good nature. I perceive you have an engagement. Luchesi—.” Fortunato wants to go the vaults but Montresor is holding him back and saying that Luchesi can come. Fortunato not supporting that he is begging Montresor to take him not knowing that he is heading towards his immolation. Also, the one reason why Montresor is saying no to Fortunato is that if he said had said come to my friend and would have forced Fortunato to come then Fortunato would have had a doubt about it and would have asked that why are you forcing me to so basically Montresor was trying to play it off cool. He also didn't want to get caught while doing it, but in the meantime he wanted Fortunato to know that it was him, Montresor, that killed him and that it was all revenge. Montresor stated,” It must be understood that by neither word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will.
