The Cask of Amontillado will forever be known as some of Edgar Allan Poe greatest works he has ever written. As Poe has written many novels and poem, this piece of work leaves a lot of suspicion and questions for the reader. It has been said that the audience is left with curiosity about his novel, The Cask of Amontillado. Around the time this story was written, Edgar Allen Poe was near his death and mentally ill. This could leave the reader some important factors of information to the reasoning why The Cask of Amontillado is written in such a dark and horror setting. Throughout the novel, there is normally always a dark setting that is included in each place the characters in the novel are encountering. Montresor is one of the main characters in the story. He is one of the effective reasons on how the Cask of Amontillado is filled with horror, dark and gothic setting. Although, Edgar Allen Poe has to be included as well for how the setting is used. Poe uses colors to determine the mood of the novel, and he used this technique for many of his stories. As black is very popular in the Cask of Amontillado, it can also be used more than just a color in the novel. Black can have a result of death, which is the outcome in the Cask of Amontillado. Death can also involve a gothic setting, which is why Poe is more prominent in using dark colors rather than bright and enthusiastic colors in his novel. A study has been shown in depicted Edgar Allan Poe’s use of colors and it states, “It frequently happens, for example, that Poe’s tale of horror are set in the darkest night, though few words are used that may be classified under black” (Clough 599).
