“The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.” Montresor has completely had it with Fortunato, but it makes one wonder: what exactly did Fortunato do to deserve his last breath? In the reading, “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, the answer is left out from the short story to pull the reader in, and to focus more on the setting, the plot, and the theme. The climax with Montresor is under way to trick Fortunato to dome, and the setting in a creepy wine cellar with old bricks and bones scattered around; is what really makes the theme, revenge, strong throughout “The Cask of Amontillado.” Fortunato insulted the family of Montresor and that’s when Montresor decided to do something about it. In the reading Edgar Allan Poe states, “But he had one great weakness: he liked to drink good wine, and indeed he drank much of it.” The fact that Fortunato loved wine, gave Montresor the best approach to trick him into the family’s wine cellar. Montresor was a smart man and knew exactly what to do, so that Fortunato would not suspect anything. Montresor’s approach was to inform Fortunato that he had Amontillado wine …show more content…

The climax is the fact that Montresor was going to get his revenge by tricking and killing Fortunato. Then we have the setting, where it takes place in an old wine cellar that lead to the theme death. In the wine cellar there were old bones of the Montresor family along the wall, which I found quite interesting because Fortunato insulted the family name of Montresor and is now going to die with the Montresor’s family. It’s a perfect plan for revenge; if one insults the family name, one will die with remains of the family that one insulted. Therefore, both the climax and the setting help make the theme revenge and death strong throughout the
