In “The Cask of Amontillado” Fortunato meets his untimely death in the hands of Montresor. Some may argue that Montresor is insane for why he murdered his friend, but it can be argued that he fits the build of being sane. Sanity is defined as “the condition of being based on reason or good judgement” (“sanity”). A sane murderer Montresor in “The Cask of Amontillado” models the characteristics of a sane murderer by portraying a motive, plan, and conscience. In “The Cask of Amontillado” first Montresor models the characteristic of a sane murderer by portraying a motive. The definition of motive is “the goal or object of a person’s actions” (“motive”). Motive in a murder is the objective of finding a reason to kill someone; Montresor has a motive. In the first sentence Montresor says “...but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (Poe 426). This is the first indication that he had motive to kill. He believed that he had been insulted and now he sought revenge. Conscience is defined as “the inner sense of what is right or wrong in one’s conduct of motives, impelling one toward right action” (“conscience”). One can have a conscience and still chose to do wrong, it is knowing that the action is wrong. As Montresor is building the wall over the opening where Fortunato is chained in, he hears a shill scream from Fortunato. This makes him tremble for a brief moment and then pause in hesitation to continue building (Poe 431). Just before the final stones were laid over the area, Montresor hears a jingling of bells from Fortunato’s, he stated “My heart grew sick...” then hastened to finish his job (Poe 432). These two occurrences prove that Montresor has a conscience. He knows he is doing wrong and has instances where he feels guilty about doing it but he continues on
