As I have grown up and experienced college, I have encountered numerous people and fellow students aspired to become engineers and doctors, all eager to become esteemed members of the community because of the status such careers bring. I, however, have always been drawn to the career path of pharmacy and becoming a contributing member of my community in that particular outlet. A pharmacy is in many ways a pillar of a community’s overall health and wellbeing as well as a valuable resource for medical and insurance related information. My main goal is to use my career in pharmacy to serve the public in the best manner I can. I would not hesitate to challenge the status quo to ensure that I have done all I can. I believe that public service, even in the smallest way, can lead to great benefits. I have taken four semesters of Spanish because in Astoria, where I work, there is a large Spanish demographic. My ability to understand Spanish, even if it is elementary, will help me help more patients. In addition, I am majoring in Economics and I believe this will help me interpret the demand of my patients so that I can cater to their needs. Managing a successful pharmacy takes a certain type of business savvy that would require one to balance patient satisfaction and economic growth. The relationship and the connections built with the patients and other members of the team, made me realise that this is the sector that I want to work in for my career. During this pharmacy role, I was introduced to tasks that are carried out by a physician associate; this included taking medical histories for the pharmacist before he gave specific injections or before I carried out the glucose, cholesterol or blood pressure test. Working at Britannia Pharmacy introduced me to many disorders as I had direct contact with patients and doctors/ general practitioners. Alongside my undergraduate degree, I also worked in a retail store which allowed me to develop some vital skills required for my chosen field such as teamwork, communication and leadership whilst also gaining knowledge about disorders, the biology and drugs. Studying psychological therapies enabled me to increase my skills as well gain an insight into the mental disorders that can arise alongside the physical health.
Many people rush through their daily life without contemplating their actions, thereby missing vast opportunities for achievement. They waste valuable time engaging in frivolous matters instead of putting their energies towards more productive and meaningful purposes. In the words of the Dalai Lama: “Life is not about acquiring money and other facilities; it is about dedicating your life to helping others as much as you can.” The immeasurable value of helping others has been engrained in me since childhood. As a result of my own difficult family circumstances, I have become more sensitive, kind and mindful towards others and their own situations. I have developed a passion for helping others, which, in combination with a proclivity towards medicine has lead to my descion to become a Physician Assistant. I’ve always looked up to Pharmacists in my local community when I was a kid. As a person growing up in California, our local hospital was an hour drive away and people relied on Pharmacists for basic medical inquiries more than they do with doctors. As a premature baby, my immune system had been always weak as a child, and whenever I catch a cold or have a minor fever, my parents took me to Dr. Lin, a local pharmacist who has been in the neighborhood for almost nine years. Dr. Lin would hand me sweets while assuring my concerned parents that I will be alright, and teach me about personal hygiene and how to prevent minor illness. To me, the impression of a Pharmacist is like a family member: not as serious as doctors in hospitals but as respected by people around town. That impression heightened my interest in pharmacy. I started to read the labels on drug bottles and learn to take medicine by the correct dosage. The curiosity and respect shaped my determination to pursue pharmacy as my future career.
Since my early schooling days, science and mathematics have always fascinated me given that all components of the world are explained on the basis of these disciplines. In this regard, Pharmacy which is based on Chemistry and Mathematics has interested me a great deal as it has direct impacts on our daily lives. The more I have become familiar with the chemistry and mathematics knowledge involved in pharmacy, the more I have appreciated its significance in improving the lives of people in the community. I really don't know how to start this, but going to your school, with its esteemed name that is heard everywhere in the school that I go to currently, seems a little like a dream. I'm trying not to be too corny, its not really working. Aside from my academics, i do draw, sing, play a little piano and drums and enjoy writing songs and stories.
Pharmacists have a duty to promote their profession to health care professionals, patients, and the public. Although there are many ways to do so, the best is to be model practitioners of pharmacy and show everyone firsthand what pharmacists are really about. This must be done by setting the image of pharmacists being not just dispensing machines, but patient-centered care providers whose utmost priority is to give patients and prescribers useful drug information in order to play a part in achieving optimal life outcomes for the patient. Pharmacists must prove themselves to be accessible, effective, trustworthy, and indispensable.
As a pre-pharmacy student, I am aware that any pharmacist has a respected and trusted role in the community. To this end, I have given back my time to the community, working with the mentally handicapped in their daily activities and field trips
My internal compass has always pointed me in the right direction and I know what an honor it would be to be given the opportunity to embark on a career as a pharmacist. From a young age, I was a scientist. Magnifying glass in hand I would observe ants marching methodologically in line. As the oldest child I would always hold the coveted position of doctor while my sisters and cousins squirmed during my examinations. I would then take on my role as pharmacist by handing out candy, pinks for pain and whites for stomach aches.
My true passions lie in a pharmaceutical profession and are derived from my desire to be involved in the improvement of others’ heath, to fulfill my interest in medicine, and to possess the means to explore my greatest potential in a meaningful career.
