Farmers in Iowa were encouraged to reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers on their crops to help stop polluting the groundwater and runoffs. The farmers were over-using fertilizers and pesticides because they were not taking into consideration the fertilizers that were already in the ground from past years. Since the project began, there has been a decline in nitrate levels in groundwater (Miller, par. 16). If all farmers would adopt this new way of thinking, the water contamination problem would deteriora... ... middle of paper ... ...pesticides that will harm the earth nor eating any pesticides.
Wetlands When most people think of wetlands the first thing that will pop into their mind will be visions of swamps and flooded plains. These marshy lands would seem to have no purpose, while in reality they are the most precious form of ecosystem that we have in America. Wetlands contribute to biodiversity, clean water, flood control, and provide a habitat for millions of species of plants and animals. Even with all this wetlands still face mass destruction, much like the rain forests they are just as productive and face similar rates of devastation (Mitchell, J. (1992, October).
Water holes dried up, and floods washed nests away. Florida and federal officials and politicians including the president and the vice president of the United States are now giving this fragile environment the attention it deserves. The key to fixing this huge "puddle of spilled milk" is water. Although the road is hard, there is still a slight hope of salvation. Local farmers, mostly sugarcane farmers, will have to conserve their water, and possibly even give back some water to the wetlands.
BP should have been more open with its understanding of industry practices and technology. They should have acknowledged their lack of preparedness and their poor cementing of the drilling spot. They knew the government was dependant on them for information and it appears that they took advantage to avoid blame. They should have made all their resources available to the government from day one in order to speed the clean-up efforts. With inspectors who didn’t really have the same knowledge of drilling as the industry they were attempting to regulate they were at liberty to change the procedures and processes at their whi... ... middle of paper ... ...to regulate itself.
Everyone should stop recycling. Everyone should drive their gasoline cars more, leave the lights on, let the water run, and go wild with any noxious chemicals, regardless of our aquatic friends. After all, even with all of these environment preserving activities, we could still greatly damage our ecosystems. The cause of this is simply because of the technological pollution caused by the use of genetically engineered crops. These plants are different in that they have had genes inserted into their genetic code, giving them added traits which are suppose to aid them in producing greater yield or defending against insects and disease, amongst other benefits.
Fertilizer pollution Fertilizers are very commonly used on all types of farms and plants, but they strongly affect water pollution, and can be a big problem. Whether if fertilizers are organic or artificial, if they get into water ecosystems, they can cause very large problems. The fertilizers will cause an algae bloom, which can later cause dead zones. Dead zones are spots in which large algae blooms happened, and there are very little animals in the marine zone. Fertilizer pollution interacts with economic and political issues, and many things must be done in order to help resolve the issue.
The first attempt of this land mitigation program was not as successful as hoped because the wetlands were still being destroyed and just moved to a different location. “So Disney bought and turned over the former Walker Ranch- a wild parcel of land that had been slated to become a community of 25,000 with golf courses and a marina- to The Nature Conservancy” (Carlton 94). By doing this, Disney was able to save an important part of Florida’s wild wetlands for future generations. Along with The Disney Wildlife Preserve, the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund (DWCF) is another important component in Disney’s efforts to not only be a protector of the planet but an educator of children in the teachings of the values of conservation. The money that is behind the DWCF is used for financial support
Wetlands are one of the most valuable assets this world has, but Unfortunately, do to poor public education of wetlands; many wetlands have been either destroyed or turned into farmland. Consequentially, wetland ecosystems have severely declined. In order to restore and protect our wetlands people need to recognize the important qualities wetlands have to offer. Wetlands act as natural sponges that trap and slowly release surface water over time. This ability impedes on the water’s momentum and erosive potential, reducing floods, and allowing for ground water recharge.
