The “Butterfly Effect” is a metaphor that encapsulates the concept of sensitive dependence on initial conditions in the chaos theory; namely that small differences in the initial condition of a dynamic system may produce large variations in the long term behavior of the system. This is a great theory that can be applied to specific aspects of life and life in general. I believe it can be applied to my life in the sense that every event that has occurred in my life; big, small, good or bad. I would not change anything, because they all came together to bring me to where I am today. I was not always a social and outgoing individual and I considered myself unlucky in life. I never stood out and did not have enough confidence to attempt to do so, not until one day in middle school. My Mathematics professor gave us an unexpected test. A lot of my classmates did not do well and I was sure I would be one of them. To my greatest surprise I scored the highest in the class with an A on the test. She called me aside after that class to talk about how I could develop my Math skills. She also ...
People who have a position in the government can start off doing good things for the people and country, but will become power hungry and want to be in control of every little thing. This hunger for power can be seen in the novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, by Julia Alvarez, which demonstrates how the daily lives of the citizens in the Dominican Republic are affected under the rule of their oppressive ruler, Trujillo. Alvarez focuses on 4 sisters, the Mirabal family, who strive for equality and democratic rights. The 4 sisters have all been been oppressed by Trujillo´s ridiculous laws. Enforcing unnecessary laws on society makes sure that Trujillo stays in complete control, which compels the people to strive for more freedom and rights,
The butterfly effect is an idea that if something was changed in the past it would completely change what happens in the future. The allusion is shown when Mr. Travis and the group notice how much things have changed when they got back to present time. Mr. Travis looked at Eckles boot and noticed that there was a dead butterfly on the bottom of the boot. Then, Mr. Travis realised that killing that butterfly was the reason that the present had completely changed. In the story it says, “It fell on the floor, exquisite thing, a small thing that could upset balances and knock down a line of small dominoes and then gigantic dominoes, all down the years across time”
It has been said that one small moment can create large effects; the butterfly effect. For Betty Williams, her small moment occurred on August 10th, 1976 when she witnessed an innocent family get mauled by a runaway car driven by an IRA member in her hometown Belfast, Ireland. Three children were killed and their mother, Anne Maguire, was seriously injured and later committed suicide. Williams was greatly moved by this tragic event. Two days after witnessing the accident, she obtained six thousand signatures on a petition for peace. Later, Williams teamed up with Anne Maguire’s sister to form The Women For Peace, now known as the The Community For Peace. The organization was known for holding mass protests. William’s spearheaded a peaceful march of ten thousand Protestant and Catholic women. The march was diffused by the Irish Army, but it did not stop the movement. The next march was attended by 3,500 people, proving that nonviolent protesting was effective. The loss of three children eventually led one woman to
The Butterfly Diving Bell sits on my bedside table . It was a busy day when I finished and I'm struggling with how to express my appreciation for the best of the author , Jean - Dominique Bauby . As a beautiful French dessert , each crafted wonderful phrases should be savored. Posted by Bauby bears a sense of humor combined with depression that required for reading and slow digestion . He must have been a Morrissey fan .
It teaches us to expect the unexpected. A famous example of chaos theory, referred to as the "butterfly effect, “postulates that the beat of a butterfly's wing could trigger a breath of breeze
The influence of the people around you has a great impact on your life. In In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez and in Journey to Jihad by Ben Taub, radicalization is due to the influences of others. Minerva’s rebellion was caused by both Sinita and Trujillo. Patria’s rebellion was caused by the influences of Minerva and the Church. Jeojen’s radical actions were due to his girlfriend, as well as his neighbor. Minerva, Patria, and Jeojen all epitomize the significance of influential people within one’s life.
1. Tell us about an experience, in school or out, that taught you something about yourself and/or the world around you. (maximum 200 words)
Ever since I was in middle school, people always told me that I’m quiet and shy. Having said that, I never felt comfortable communicating with people I didn't know that well. That also includes speaking or presenting in front of a class. According to my family and friends, I’m the complete opposite, because they claim that I’m talkative. Being shy and nervous did affect my schoolwork. I wouldn’t raise my hand in class that often, because I didn’t feel comfortable enough. When I was in 6th grade, my teacher would always call up students to share something they liked about a story they read. When the teacher called out my name, my heart started pounding, my hands were shaking and my mind went completely blank. I was so nervous to the point where I felt like I was going to pass out any moment. That’s when I asked the teacher if I could excuse myself to go to the bathroom. She didn’t mind that request so I tried to calm myself down by washing my face and breathing. After class, my teacher and I discussed my inability to present in front of a class. She was obliging, because she agreed to help me overcome being shy and to help boost my self-confidence. Shyness and nervousness also stopped me from participating in activities and obtaining opportunities. In 10th grade, my Chemistry teacher suggested a film festival, because she was aware that I loved filmmaking. At first, I considered the idea, because I’ve never done anything like it before. Having thought about it, I then realized that I was going to have my movie up on a full screen where
Traveling back in time to change the future for better, but instead creating a world that is being destroyed. In the movie The Butterfly Effect, a group of people travel back in time to change the future. While in the past, a man was knocked outside of the marked path smashing a butterfly changing the future for the worse. Even though killing a butterfly does not seem to have a major impact on the future, it changes it entirely. This concept is the general idea of cause and effect, otherwise known as causality. These slight movements can change utopian societies into dystopian societies. A utopian society is known as the perfect world, where absolutely nothing goes wrong. Dystopian societies can be identified as worlds that are in ruins from the previous society. Utopian Societies can be a world without preservatives, but without those preservatives food begins to deteriorate rapidly, leaving the nation without farms starving, thus turning into a dystopian society. Pieces of the present can be examined to determine the future, this process is
While we live our lives, we often wonder whether the things we do will impact the future; and sometimes, our actions end up for the better and other times, for the worse. This “little-cause big-effect” idea we have is what we call the butterfly effect. Like those speeches organizations give when trying to get you to donate money, the butterfly effect tells us that the things we do at the beginning, even the tiny ones, have an inexpressible impact in the world later in time. In fact, the butterfly effect lives up to its name pretty well. Its discovery lead to the popularization of the Chaos Theory, the loss of the true message from its discoverer, and a impact in the way weather is forecasted and the entertainment world. In this sense, the
Chaos Theory is a relatively new theory to the Social Work practice. This theory suggests that systems are constantly changing. As explained by Bussolari and Goodell (2009), Henri Ponicare tried to show that though systems are simple, they may produce unexpected behavior. One of the main concepts of the chaos theory is the butterfly effect. The butterfly effect simply sates that any small change “can greatly alter the emergent pattern” or result (Bussolari & Goodell, 2009). The origin of the butterfly effect is scientific. It comes from Edward Lorenz, a meteorologist who found that a slight decimal change in his calculations drastically changed his computer output (Bussolari & Goodell, 2009). For example, in the short story, “A Sound of Thunder” Ray Bradbury tells a story of a hunter named Eckels who travels back in time and inadvertently steps on a butterfly. When Eckles gets back to the future, he finds that things have changed drastically such as the results of a recent election (Bradbury, 1952). A seemingly minute change such as crushing a butterfly significantly altered the future.
When tragedy strikes, it is normal for individuals to go through stages of grief. In some situations, people become cemented in one stage of emotional instability. They focus so much on their anger over the inevitability of the unfairness of life, that it eventually makes them go mad. This theme composes the synopsis of Joyce Carol Oates’ book We Were the Mulvaneys. The rape of Marianne Mulvaney catalyzed the disembowelment of the Mulvaney family due to their inability to move on from their grief; each family member coped in unique manners.
Many years ago when I was a freshman in high school, an event happened to me that changed my life for the better. My friend invited me to go hiking with him and his sister. He was going to go hiking in Yosemite. The following day I prepared myself mentally and physically in order to accomplish this hike.
Many changes for the good and some were bad but, there were some learning experiences that help make me a better person. The events in my life, was dealing with the Birth and The Death of my first daughter.
In 7th grade I had to get up in front of my class to get, and present a commercial. I was so scared at first because I am a very shy person. It is not easy for me to speak in front a lot of people. As I waited for my turn I felt like I was going to cry. It felt like my stomach was in my throat. In the end I was scared for nothing because when I went up and did really good. The teacher complimented me on my work. After that day I was so proud of myself for conquering my fear. In 8th grade I finally got on the honor roll, again. I was so happy to be on the honor roll, because I hadn’t been on the honor roll in a really long time. seeing all those A’s made me so happy. I felt the same excitement as I felt in kindergarten when I first gotten on the honor
