I have analysed Johnson 's rhetorical appeals and determined that the contents of her article are very relevant to The Shorthorn readers. I recommend this article to be published in The Shorthorn because it discusses bottled water and relates that with environment and health. Johnson 's claim, reasons, evidence, ethos, logos, pathos, counterargument are very relevant for readers of The Shorthorn. Johnson tries to convince that although bottled water is convenient to use and sometimes even becomes a life savior, it should be avoided at any cost and tap water should only be preferred. This claim allows The Shorthorn readers to be sure that the author is taking account of both positives as well as negatives of bottled water but includes comparatively lots of negative factors to persuade readers that bottled water should be avoided. She supports this claim by reasons such as bottled water has a negative impact on human health, plastic has a negative impact on the environment, and the plastic bottle is just a waste of money and energy. She also supports her claim of convenience of bottled water by talking about reusable water bottles ' convenience. As a sub-claim, Barnett and Gleick illustrate how marketing and false advertising play a major role in the creation of the grandiose image of bottled water. As a ground Barnett states, how “Aquafina” gets their water from the Detroit River”, however places “snow-capped mountain peaks” on its labels, while “Everest Water” comes from “Corpus Christi, not Mt. Everest”, and “Glacier Clear Water” is actually “tap water from Greeneville, Tennessee” (Barnett 34). Barnett states the actual sources of well-known bottling companies, which are consumed by many people on a daily basis. Reading this information allows the audience to reconsider their previous beliefs on bottled water and not base all their judgment on labels. Another ground used by Barnett, is how a beverage analyst, Hemphill, believes “consumers base their bottles-water decisions on three things: convenience, the packaging, and the price as more important than whether its drinking water or spring water” (Barnett 35). This ground illustrates the superficiality of water bottles, where the image of the bottle is more important than the actual content. “Last Call at the Oasis” is a documentary about our world’s water crisis. The film discusses how many large cities in America are getting closer to use up their available water, how many areas across the globe do not have access to drinking water and are forced to drink contaminated water, how water shortages are causing acts of violence and are causing stress to agricultural communities, and a possible solution of using recycle water to stop us from wasting so much water. The film goes around the globe to talk to scientists who are studying contaminated water, people who have become very sick due to this water, and to the agricultural community in Australia where, unfortunately, some farmers have take their own lives due to water shortages.

For ever water bottle made, non-renewable resources are wasted to produce an unnecessary luxury. For the bottled water Americans enjoy, seventeen million barrels of oil are used (excluding transportation), which could fuel more than 1.3 million cars for a year. Most water is imported and exported from places that are thousands of miles away, like Fiji. Although oil is controversial in nature, for every one liter of water produced, three liters are used; the excess water wasted can supply clean water to the world’s poorest countries. Moreover, the energy used in bottle production can supply energy to over 190,000 homes. The resources that can be replaced by ceasing the production of water bottles can solve many global problems faced by a growing population.
In Annie Leonard's video “The Story of Bottled Water,” she introduces her audience into the downfalls of continuing to buy bottled water instead of just using tap water. Annie Leonard did an extraordinary job of convincing her audience that bottled water isn't a healthy alternative to tap water through an effective balance of logos and pathos appeals. She starts by explaining why we don't need watered bottles because they are less quality and less regulated than tap water. Annie Leonard then disputes the cost of bottled water compared to the cost of tap water. Annie Leonard applies many logos appeals in her video involving bottled water by questioning the audience and asking direct questions that need common sense to answer. In today’s society it is uncommon to see people walking around without water. Those who carry water with them either have their water in a reusable bottle or have bought bottled water. Bottled water is the more commonly found type of water carried around, reason being that it is easy to just buy a huge pack so that a person can just grab a bottle a go. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which oversees the bottled-water industry, Americans drink more than eight billiongallons of bottled water each year. Most of that water is packaged in plastic bottles.The EPA estimates that plastics such as those used to make water bottles make up nearly 13 percent of our trash. An industry watchdog group reports that it takes nearly eighteen million barrels of oil to make the amount of plastic needed to meet Americans'thirst for bottled water. That's about the same amount of oil that a million vehicles use in one year. Oil is a nonrenewable resource—once it's gone, it's gone. Worse yet, the vehicles used to move bottled water from place to place release harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Perhaps more alarming is that people recycle fewer than 20 percent of their empty bottles. Most emptybottles are tossed in the trash. From there, they end up in a landfill, where they cause further environmental damage.
Given all the negative effects that come from plastic, why are people still participating in this poisonous cycle? Some claim that bottled water simply tastes better than water from the tap whether they prefer spring, purified, distilled, or mineral water. Most people just appreciate the convenience bottled water offers; it’s easier to carry little bottles that one can throw away instead of larger reusable bottles that need to be brought home at the end of the day. Also, bottled water comes in big “value packs” in most stores, which is beneficial for large group events and big families.
