For my third semester book report, I decided to read a book called The Book Thief. I will summarize on how a girl named Liesel, who lived in Hitler’s time, came to Himmel Street. How she explored the place, meets new people, faced dangers, and came to love words. Liesel was only 9 when she is taken to live with the Hubermanns, a foster parent, on Himmel Street in Molching, Germany, in the late 1930s. Liesel’s brother could have made it, but he died during the way here. Liesel arrived with few possessions, but among them is The Grave Digger's Handbook, a book that she had stolen from her brother’s burial place. That begins her first act of thievery. Throughout the book, Liesel steal books from the Nazi book-burnings, the mayor’s wife’s library, and from where they can be found. Rosa Hubermann (foster mother) was cold and impatient at first; Hans Hubermann (foster father) was patient and gentle throughout the book. For living, Rosa wash peoples’ laundry, while Hans on the other hand, sometime paint others’ house. Liesel made many friends, during her life at Himmel Street. One of them is Rudy Steiner. They went to many places to explore, steal books, and go to school together. Things turn out pretty good for Liesel, her papa taught her how to read, had many difficult tasks from Rosa, like laundry, and fun with Rudy. But, during this time Hitler is also becoming more powerful, so life on Himmel Street become more fearful. Hitler is also capturing Jews. Life changed one day for Liesel, when Max moved in. Max was a Jew; his father was Hans’s best friend, who saved Hans from war. Max brings joy and happiness to Liesel’s life. They had many things in common. Such as reading books, dreams, fist fighting, and both were brought here by train... ... middle of paper ... ...ermann, Liesel’s foster mother. At the beginning of the novel, she is mean and cruel. The way Rosa acts, it seems like she only care about herself: her way of talking almost scare people. In the beginning, when Liesel race Rudy and get dirty by mud, Liesel knew she would get scream at, by Rosa. Rosa yells at everyone. Even Hans. The story takes a turn, when Hans goes to war. While Hans was away, Rosa missed him terribly. She hugged his accordion tightly and cried. That shows that sometime Rosa do have a kind heart. Death said that she had a big one. Considering the in the book, when Death came to take Rosa’s soul away, he said he can see Rosa had a big heart. But truly doesn’t show it. Some changes in the book that I wish can be changed are, making the bombing happen slower. The author should describe the surrounding area and how Death feels about the whole bombing.
