In this paper, I will explain the relationship between the body and mind and show that psychological problems can impair bodily function and possibly cause disease. I will define psychological problems as stress and feelings of anxiety. Our body’s immune system is a two-way conversation between the brain and the complex system (Donald, 2008), which displays a mind and body relationship. The body and mind relationship can work in two ways, either by top-down processing or by bottom-up processing. Top-down processing refers to using previous knowledge to process the environment around a person. It could perceive a situation as stressful based on past experiences. Bottom-up processing refers to the brain's use of incoming signals to construct perceptions. Most of the time, a stressful event would trigger the body’s senses and possibly impair the body’s functions. Anxiety can impair ability to recognize faces.
