Twins can be considering a blessing to have. In Africa this is not completely true. They are seen as a gift but also a curse on the mother. African has their own beliefs on the concept of twins and how they are believed to be special pairs. Different cultures explore different ways to embrace the birth of twins. When a child is born in doubles it symbolizes good fortune for the family. They believe that since the two were born together they both have great knowledge of each other. Therefore they have the ability to be able to connect with each other on a stronger level. The twins also have the capability to communicate on a spiritual level considering that one is supernatural.
As in any situation where there are positive aspects the negative

Typically dual means two therefore you would think the piece would include two figures. That is not exactly the case in many of the art pieces. There is usually one figure that depicts an image that represents two elements usually that is good and evil. This is a very important concept in African art because it is believed that everyone has a dual personality. Everyone has two sides to them that they show to the world. They believe that every person has that sense of a duality inside of them. Everyone has two personalities that are completely different from one another. In the art pieces you are not able to detect which side is the evil and what side is the good. Many of them have the exact same face and are just doubled on the platform. They do not make visual detections when you look at a person you cannot see their personality at first. This concept of duality is similar to the American theory of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. When he portrayed Dr. Jekyll he was a good person but when his evil personality Mr. Hyde took over his mind he would become evil. This is the exact concept that African believed to be …show more content…
Yoruba is located in lower part of Nigeria. They are known for the twin pieces in their art. This particular culture believes that twins have a connection with the spirit world. They convey this idea through the design of their at work. The first that I am going to speak about is the Cracked Vessel art piece. This particular was made in 13th-14th century. The piece is supposed to represent duality in an individual. The two heads that is seen in the piece represents the two mental states of an individual. The “outer head” which is called Ori Inu and the “inner heard” which is known as “Ori Ode”. The Ori Inu is meant to represents a person’s physical self what others see when they look at them. The Ori Ode is the person’s spiritual persona. This are very two different personalities that are portrayed between one
Twin studies have been used to distinguish between genetic and environmental factors for many disorders in the general population including ectodermal dysplasia, Ellis-van Creveld, and anencephaly. This review focuses on genetic disorders affecting monozygotic, dizygotic, and conjoined twins to gain a better understanding of them. Many studies focus on twins because they have a nearly identical genome, which eliminates environmental factors. In case studies, the concordance rates in monozygotic twins have supported that certain disorders were caused by genetics and not the environment. The discordant values in twins will also be evaluated briefly. Twinning studies have also shown linkages between specific disorders and the genes responsible for them. Knowing the location of these genes allows patients to be treated quickly and efficiently. This paper will discuss the possible causes of twinning and the various methods of identifying abnormalities in twins. These methods also allow preventive measures against the rise of birth defects during prenatal development. Epigenetics in twins is also viewed through the perspective of effects on them. Treatments for genetic disorders in twins are reviewed, ranging from the restoration of malformed teeth to the separation of conjoined twins. Support groups for twins in treatment, and their families are also briefly reviewed.
The debate was how such a barbaric society could produce such sophisticated artwork. The quality of the Benin bronzes, based on...
Many African cultures see life as a cycle we are born, we grow and mature, enter adulthood, and one day we will eventually die but the cycle continues long after death. In Africa art is used as a way to express many things in their society, in this paper I will focus on different ways traditional African art are used to describe the cycle of one’s life. Since Africa is such a large continent it is important to keep in mind that every country and tribe has different rituals and views when it comes to the cycle of life. It is estimated to be well over a thousand different ethnic groups and cultures in Africa today. Thousands of cultures in Africa see the stages of life bound together in a continuous cycle; a cycle of birth, growth, maturity,
Western attitudes to African people and culture have always affected how their art was appreciated and this has also coloured the response to the art from Benin.
In the article of “Exhibiting Intention: Some Preconditions of the Visual Display of Culturally Purposeful Objects”, the author, Michael Baxandall mainly discussed interrelationship within the group of three agents upon their influence and reflect of the artifacts in the museum, and the understanding of culture elements behind the display. In the first part of this paper, I will identify the points of view of the author. In the second part, I will analyze the layout of the gallery, “Imagining the Underground” in Earth Matters in Fowler Museum in UCLA. Several discussion related to the settings of the museum and the article will be discussed interactively. In general, this paper tries to show the robustness and the weakness of Baxandall’s model, which will specified.
The characters in the novel are all twice-born because they wanted who they were in Deptford to disappear. Only of the characters were able to change who they were completely while the others just developed more into themselves as they grew. The idea of the twice-born is the idea of being able to change who you are and to completely move on from everything that has been holding you back.
The siblings of twins are worth mentioning as well because they tend to feel left out – neither special nor important. This can lead to feelings of low self-esteem or to feeling driven to over achieve in an attempt to attract the attention and praise they need and feel they deserved but did not get (Blair, 2011, p.126).
As I walk through the crowded mall with my sister, little children stare, most adults do a discreet double take, and some bold adults question us outright. “Wow, are you twins?” “Do you know you look the same?” “What’s it like to be a twin?” “Do you have, like, psychic powers, or something with each other?” These are the most common questions twins hear. Almost all twins don’t really mind them and sometimes the attention is cool. Mostly, we just smile tolerantly at each other and answer them as best we can. After all, we don’t really know how to describe being a twin. We have never known anything else. Nonetheless, here we are. So, as a person who might not know exactly what she is talking about, I will try to briefly explanation to the general public the experience of being a genetic quirk.
Now that this has been said, two illustrations that help us understand the way of thinking is that the Navajo Sand paintings and Seneca False Mask: two of which are rich in spiritual and cosmic meaning and power.
One of the major advantages of being is that their twin provides them a bond that nothing else will ever compare to. In their lives, there will be nobody closer to you than your twin. Starting from a young age parents can see that “they become each other’s transitional objects—you know, that teddy bear or security blanket that helps to ease the pain when Mommy’s not around.” As they grow older, they learn that their twin is going to be the main person who’s going to be with them through thick and thin. Another advantage includes that you always have spare parts. Say for instance you needed a organ or blood. You twin is going to be the first person to offer their assistance in helping you to get better. Twins can learn how to compromise better than others because they have had to deal with compromises their whole life, and it’s more on that they themselves learn to compromise then being forced to compromise. You also have a person to help you in your life who knows exactly how you feel, and with being a twin, how you think. With that being said you always have a second look to the same situation where it can help you see the other side of things that you wouldn’t have seen without your twins
A common aspect of African culture is our mediating of deities, ancestors, and spirits, by performing rituals and contacting ancestors or historical ideals. This spiritual combination creates a non-Western idea of movement in art. I enjoy this part of our culture, where we create a less static environment. We become other beings, through our usage of art, dance, and costume with mask and headwear. Our artistic creators are forgotten. Our original artwork are eventually forgotten. The work goes back to the Earth, for the only true matter is how the spirits are manifested in the objects at the current time; eventually even this wears out. At the time of the spiritual manifestation in the objects, they are some of the most powerful aspects in our society.

middle of paper ... ... The side lighting emphasises the detail and aesthetic qualities of the sculptures and strongly suggests that they should be viewed and compared with works such as 14th and 15th century Italian altar pieces or eastern Orthodox Triptych icons, regarded as stunning art and, therefore, exhibited in national art galleries, even though their original function was routine religious ceremony, as probably was that of the bronzes. This suggests that the best case for the retention of the British Benin sculptures is to accord them the unique status they deserve as exceptional artworks and exhibit them appropriately in a prestigious national art gallery, for everyone to appreciate fully. I have always been fascinated by conjoined twins and have always had questions about them like; what do the Siamese have to do with conjoined twins? Why does this form of twin happen? What, if any genes cause this? What types of Conjoined twins are there? How does the environment affect, if at all, the biological families' gene pool? In my research in efforts to prepare this paper, I found the answers to this question and many more. This term paper will cover the types of conjoined twins, the biological occurrence that causes conjoined twins, a look into some of the genetic and environmental causes of conjoined twins, the types of conjoined twins and the genetic and social impact of conjoined twins.
