It is important to note that the term cancer refers to a broad class of diseases as cancers have many different origins and must be treated differently. Can the immune system be trained to effectively treat or prevent certain cancers? First a look to the past to see where this theory came from to where it is taking us today, a look to the future where vaccines and potential cures could be the medical breakthrough of the century. For years the go to cancer treatment has been very invasive and often created hardships for patients. Today we are on the fast track of a breakthrough that could redefine typical cancer treatments, one that could and will save thousands who are at risk.

This was launched by Novartis and Broad Institute3. According to Mark Fishman, President of the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, “Probing cell lines with medicines targeted at specific pathways, as done for the Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia, provides a powerful tool for design of cancer treatment.” Even though cancer cell lines are important model system, the scientific community questions the reliability of this system. The question is how does enzyme therapy work and in clinical trials how effective has the enzyme therapy been on the cancer in improving not only the quality of life of the patient but also the longevity of the patients life. Introduction: Dr. John Beard in 1906 proposed that enzyme therapy could be used in the treatment of cancer, this aroused some controversy in the world of medicine, however, Dr. Beard’s theory is now being put into practice and is a method used by many. (Beard) The enzyme therapy consists of the extraction and administration of the enzymes to the patients. (Gonzalez) The enzymes are extracted from the plants and are transformed into medicine such as fluorouracil, vinblastine, and cyclophosphamide. (Leipner) These are enemas, which are coated tablets.
David and Markman(2003) an extra or abnormal chromosome may increase the risk of cancer for instance, subjects with Down syndrome, who have three instead of the normal two copies of chromosomes ,have higher risk of developing acute cancer. In the fight against cancer, the use of chemicals (chemotherapy) is one of the best methods to destroy or inhibit the growth cancer cells. Chemotherapy can be used to effectively treat extensive (metastatic) cancer, which affects more than one part of the body (metastatic) cancer. This mechanism makes chemotherapy very important for a subject’s battle against cancer as radiation therapy and surgery are appropriate f... ... middle of paper ... ..., H.L. Chemotherapy Effects in Cancer Patients When we hear the words, cancer treatment, our minds naturally shoot straight to chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is one of the most commonly used ways to treat cancer. Chemotherapy did not have original plans to treat cancer patients, but it did have other plausible problems to aid. After WWII, lymphoma, a form of chemotherapy, was used to help soldiers who were harmed by mustard gas (Chemo Brain, 2012). This medical advancement continued to progress into what we now know as chemotherapy.
When these alterations, or mutations occur, they develop a mass of tissue called a tumor (Breast Cancer Treatment). With this vaccine, DCVax, participants that were included in these clinical trials have shown amazing results in overall survival time and shrinkage of tumors. The desire of finding a vaccination for cancer is remarkably high in today’s society. For some reason, FDA is hesitant about authorizing the DCVax. A corporation by the name of Dendreon discovered the first ever FDA approved vaccine called Provenge.
