Production Areas:
Cotton is cultivated in areas that are warm and experience high temperatures and favorable amounts of sunshine. Cotton is grown in areas where the amount of humidity is low. In addition, areas with too much rain or frost are not favorable for cotton growing. Africa, India, Australia and the Americas are some of the areas where cotton is a commonly grown crop (Cotton Australia, 2013).

Cotton is usually grown as an annual crop that depends on the spring, summer seasons in a particular region. Longer hot summers allow for better cotton yields since the temperatures are high and favorable to the crop. For example, in Australia, August and September are for soil preparation while September, October and November are for planting (Cotton Australia, 2013). The plants then grow from November to February then harvested and marketed between March and May. This is a typical cotton cycle which changes depending on the season in the region.

Agriculture has been practiced in what is now Alabama for centuries. Alabama agriculture has changed considerably since the mid-1860s, when cotton was king and Alabama was known as "The Cotton State." One hundred years ago almost four million acres were planted to cotton, and today only 1.3 million acres are devoted to all agricultural crops” (Mitchell, 2007). Agriculture in Alabama is mainly cotton and peanuts in the past they grew cattle corn and cotton. This entire movie is a process with many smaller inner processes. One section would be growing the cotton, first you plant it, then fertilize it at certain stages and then you also have to kill the weeds that can kill the cotton while it is growing. Next you have to harvest the cotton at just the right time and at certain conditions. Another process would be the transportation of the cotton and the products that come from the cotton. You first need to transport the raw cotton over the ocean to China. Then the cotton or the clothing needs to be transported through the streets of the cities in China. If it is not secured enough the drivers can get fined heavily for it. Another process would be the production of the cotton in to the clothes. You need to clean the cotton, and then dye it. Then the cotton has to be spooled and set in a machine with many other spools and be weaved into the machine by hand, and then the clothes need to be sewed out of the fabric.

New England differentiated from the Southern Colonies in many different ways. Economically, New England based their wealth on fishing, ship building and mainly trade. Unlike the other Southern Colonies, farmland was very poor due to the rocky soil that was unsuitable for crops. The Southern Colonies grew crops such as rice, tobacco, and cotton to make money. New England Colonists imported agricultural products while the Southern colonists exported agricultural products. Winters in the Southern Colonies were cold and rainy while the summers were hot and humid while New England had a cooler summer climate and longer colder winters. Settlers in the New England colonies had a harder time growing crops in their area due to the kind of soil. The harsh and bitterly cold winters also made it difficult. However, due to their location on the coast they were able to fish, which was essentially a staple in their economy. The middle colonies were known as the “breadbasket” because their main crops were wheat, barley, oats, rye, and corn. The southern colonies were known for growing indigo, cotton, and rice, but their primary crop was unquestionably tobacco. In 1860 about 400,000 white families owned approximately 4 million slaves. Owners of large plantations and farms grew crops for the market and also for home use. Cotton became the most important crop to grow in the United States. By the time of the Civil War, 4.9 million bales of cotton were being harvested yearly and a good portion of it was being transferred to the North. Slaves played an important role for the South, as they used them for cheap laborer and could make a quick profit from it.
Still, cotton stands alone as the most utilized fiber crop plant used around the world. Also known as "King Cotton," in the United States, it was the major force behind the institution of the American age of slavery, and cotton prevailed as the economic source for the southern states of the United States and its antebellum prosperity before the civil war. It holds an important place in America's past, present, and future. Cotton is truly the "Fabric of Our Lives".
