School Uniform?
All around the world, many schools ranging from elementary to high school enforce a
dress code for the students. Many people everywhere, including parents and the students,
disapprove of the use of uniforms for a number of reasons. At the same time, many school
officials will argue of the improvements in education and performances brought in from the
schools due to implementing school uniforms. Even though many students dislike the idea of
having to wear only certain approved clothing every day, supporters of uniforms hold value in
the improvements uniforms brings into education; ultimately, varying opinions about school
uniforms deserve to be respected.
Students, parents, and many other people do not agree with schools implementing school
uniforms and would much rather prefer to be wearing designer clothing. Many students
disapprove of wearing uniforms primarily because of the desire to wear designer clothing.
Wearing clothing that is different shows others the individuality and original style. The style the
uniform provides may not suit certain body types causing stress over the appearance at school
which could be prevented by granting students to wear personally owned clothing. The author
states that “There’s also the fact that clothing can help us all-teens especially-express who we
area Jay-z fan or a Steelers fanatic, one of the crowd or someone who dares to be different” and
“Some styles are unflattering to certain body types, which can add another challenge for kids
already struggling with their self image (Tarshis, Lauren pg.23). Some students may not be able
to afford the price of the new uniform, especially in places of poverty where parents and students

Offensive material on clothing can be distracting to others and can cause conflicts between
students that will be prevented by uniform. Ultimately, the decision is up to the individuals to see
the benefits and flaws mandated dress codes bring and to choose to agree or disagree with
uniforms.

Dress code enforces the modest dress of students, preventing bullying and distractions.Numerous people believe clothing is a distraction and when eliminated the school environment is more professional and gives a better education to a student. Authority figures consider the school apparel enforcements are constitutionally sound, not affecting the child’s right to freely express, and providing a professional and working setting causing a better learning environment and decreased amount of bullying due to clear differences in appearance. Society has taught people that they should be themselves and express their individuality. There are many people out there who think everyone should act and be the same because people get judged if they act or dress differently. Everyone is their own person and no one should have to conform to everyone else in society. The debate over whether or not uniforms should be required has been going on for years. Many schools have decided it is best to have uniforms when, in all honesty, uniforms make no difference in academic success or behavior of students. Just because someone wears a uniform does not make them any smarter of behave in a better manner. School uniforms should not be required, not only because they do not let students express themselves, but also they cost families more money and do not affect what goes on at school.
Dress codes are essentials for all schools across America. Dress codes will set the tone for students to be safe because they will help reduce violence, increase student safety, and provide a positive learning environment.
Ever wonder what it would look like to have all students wearing the same white polo shirt, black pants, and a district sweater walking in the hallway? Nowadays, public school and many districts are discussing the possibilities of enforcing the uniform policy. In most places, many private schools already require students to have their mandatory uniforms; however, there are only a few public schools adopting this mandatory school-uniform polices as one of their enrollment requirements. The reason why not all public schools participated was because people believe that they are violating the freedom of choice when enforcing this mandatory uniform policy; yet problems such as bullying and segregation, emerged in these schools. Some people still think uniforms have no benefits at all. However, all public school students should be required to wear uniforms because it would improve the academic performance, reduce the violent behaviors based on appearance judgment, and provide less stress for both parents and students.

Parents and their children are constantly arguing about the way students dress in school. This debate has become a national conversation which has been going on for more than a decade. However, there still hasn’t been a final resolution. The questions “Why do I have to wear the uniform today?” or “Can I wear this t-shirt because the color matches with my school t-shirt?” have become part of our everyday lives. The argument whether uniforms should be implemented in school has been debated over the last few decades. By implementing a uniform policy within schools would help reduce the rise of violent crimes. In today’s high schools, too many innocent youths become fatalities due to gang warfare that has spread into the school system. Many parents feel that if a uniform policy was implemented , the spread of gang warfare and the idea that children have to have name brand clothing would decrease drastically. However others are worried that this policy would infringe on students First Amendment Rights with expressing themselves. Many parents are worried that the uniforms will cost too much and they will only burden their economic status. One of the greatest controversies that is spreading throughout high schools in the United States is parents and their children against the enforcement of their school’s uniform policy. More schools have been adopting uniform policies within the past decade. Rules contained in the policy that are implemented range from wearing certain types of tops (shirts) in specified colors to students being required to tuck in their shirts. A current debate argues weather a dress code policy is efficient or takes away from student’s expression. Administrators at schools should regulate a dress code policy because the system improves discipline and student’s attention, reduces social conflict and peer pressure related to appearance, and dress code provides a more serious learning environment.
At the beginning of the 20th century almost no parent or faculty had any concerns with how students dressed to attend school. Nowadays, though, this is a giant concern among students, parents, and school board officials. Many arguments have been made over the matter saying uniforms should be required and enforced in schools. But, uniforms should not be required as they ultimately eliminate freedom of expression, promote conformity over individuality, may have a detrimental effect on students self image, emphasize the socioeconomic divisions they are supposed to eliminate, and lastly, school uniforms in public schools undermine the promise of a free education by adding an extra expense for families.
The most common argument against school uniforms is that they take away the students right to self-expression. Yes, school uniforms limit what the students have to wear, but students can still have their own ways of self-expression. Students can still express their style of choice with their hair and what accessories they wear. Their shoe choice is also a form of self-expression. Students can make the uniforms their own style without breaking the dress code. School is a place to learn. Outside of school, self- expression is limitless. Some parents also believe that it could interfere with students' natural behavior to experiment with different identities. A uniform is a standard set of clothes that is worn by a group of people. These people may be members of an organization or a group of people having the same ideas. There are thousands of kinds of uniforms in the world worn by people, such as police officers, firefighters, doctors, lawyers, security guards, and even fast-food restaurant workers. School uniforms are a controversial issue in schools today. Many schools have already adopted a policy mandating school uniforms, while many more are still considering the change. School uniforms create an atmosphere of equality in which the students are able to achieve to their best, while attaining the most out of their education. School uniforms should be mandatory to unite the school community as one, to instil discipline among the student body, and to eliminate distractions that will help students focus more, which in turn will help our society.
With uniforms, it may restrict the desire for students to dress themselves to impress or stand out. Wearing something they are comfortable with and what they love may increase their confidence level and not curb their creativity. Imagine having to wake up and put on the same thing you wore the day before and the day before that! Schools uniforms are becoming more common in today’s society. I think that school uniforms have more negative effects than positive. Even if you push a child to wear something that they are not comfortable in they will begin to act out. I believe that public school should not require uniforms. Uniforms take away our ability to self-express. School uniforms should not be required in public schools because of the student’s self-image, their safety, and high cost of uniforms that parents have to purchase every year.
