Football, one of the most beloved pastimes and fastest growing sports in America, is making its way into our lives more than we could ever realize. Our lives are surrounded by football. A large number of people watch professional football on Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays. They also watch collegiate football on Saturdays, and high school football on Fridays, all while checking player stats and injuries for fantasy football or for small talk among friends. Most people dedicate one day a week just for sitting on the couch, eating snacks, and watching non-stop football. The Super Bowl is one of the most watched sporting events in the world. It teaches young kids how to get in top condition and play organized football under safe conditions. Youth football uses mostly the same rules and regulations that the National Football League uses. Kids can experience the same thing that pros experience. Youth football programs are good ways for kids to funnel out their energy and stay out of trouble. Being physically active through football is a fun way to get into or stay in shape. Childhood obesity remains one of the country’s biggest problems. According to Stanley Herring, a clinical professor at the University of Washington’s sports medicine department, more than one-third of kids are overweight or obese. A main component of the problem is a lack of exercise at a kid’s early age. Parents should encourage kids to get outside and exercise more. Herring also said, “Being active as a child correlates with being active as an adult.” Football requires a great deal of conditioning and strength training. Studies show that being physically active through football lowers body fat, strengthens muscles, and increases the likelihood of continuing good health habits later on in life (Hewitt).
