According to an article - written by J.M. Remes-Troche in “Revista de Gastroenterología en México” (Gastroenterology Magazine in Mexico) - the main language in the field of medicine has not always been English. There are several reasons for English being the lingua franca in the field of medicine nowadays, but we will mention only two of them. Learning a language is quite possibly one of the most difficult and time- consuming endeavors a person could ever undertake. Therefore, it comes as no surprise, that a limited number of second languages are taught in schools across the western world, and languages are sometimes failed to be passed on to children growing up in a different country than their parents did. Even in Canada, an officially bilingual country, only 15% of Canadians speak English and one unofficial language (Statistics Canada 2008) and in America, only 21% of the population is versed in two languages (Logan, 2003). It has become apparent that there is a need for Canadians and Americans to learn a second language. For a country to survive, it needs to rely on other countries as there is no one country that can produce within it’s borders all the means to meet the needs of it’s people. Furthermore, with the threat of international terrorism, the economic crisis and environmental ruin looming above countries all over the world, governments and organizations need to work together to come up with solutions. These cross culture collaborations would not be possible without the ability of even a few people present to speak each other’s languages. Conversely, by remaining monolingual, skills and knowledge will become concentrated only in certain countries and as the transfer of knowledge will cease the rate of human advancement will slow. This report intends to discuss the interpersonal and personal benefits of learning a second language, and investigate different ways of learning. To accomplish this, I have conducted secondary research into the interpersonal and personal benefits of learning another language. These particular areas of research were cho...

She signaled us to the table. Almost tiptoeing across the office”(Pg 2).The lack of communication can also turn out to be an opportunity. The spread of English in Europe is growing rapidly due to political, economic, social and cultural changes. Different linguists have provided a variety of labels to categorize the use of English in different countries. Mac Arthur (1998:43) introduced a distinction between ESL (English as a Second Language) countries, where the language has an official status, EFL (English as a Foreign Language) countries where this is not the case, and ENL (English as a native language) countries. The sociolinguistic profile has been represented by Kachru (1992b) in terms of three circles: the ‘inner circle’ includes the native speakers of English (UK, USA Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand). The ‘outer circle’ includes speakers who use English as their second language in everyday communication, for instance administrators in former British colonies (India, Nigeria, etc). The ‘expanding circle’ refers to speakers who use English as a third language for specific purposes and learn it as a foreign language. This is the case in most less developed South Eastern European countries where English has been furthered deliberately. One of thes...
People live in the world of communication. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Current English (Moore, 1997), communication is defined as, “The activity or process of expressing ideas and feelings or of giving people information”. The significance of communication can be found within the context of a human existing as a social being. As a human being manages his or her life in the course of the interaction between other members of the entire society, communication is inevitable. Communication occurs through the medium of a language and it is presented in two different forms which are written and spoken (Brown & Yule, 1983: 1-10). The importance of spoken performance of a language is becoming more prominent over the written performance capability. It is because the ability to speak a language reflects a person’s personality, self image, knowledge of the world, ability to reason, skill to express thoughts in real-time (Luoma, 2004: ix). These days, due to the global trend of internationalisation, the ability to communicate in English is needed as an essential skill. Whenever the international exchange happens, the use of spoken English entails. However, it is not always an easy task for people who use English as a second language to be able to speak to the level of a native speaker. They have to perfectly understand the sound system of English, have almost instant access to proper vocabulary and be able to place words together intelligibly without hesitation. Moreover, they also have to perceive what is being said to them and need to be able to respond appropriately to acquire amiable relations or to accomplish their communicative goals (Luoma, 2004: ix). Therefore, non-native English speakers encounter these barriers and they are subject to make mistakes often. In relation to this matter, this essay argues that there are socio-cultural factors as well as linguistic factors that affect non-native speakers’ communication in English. It provides analysis of several different situations when the use of spoken English has generated miscommunication problems in regards to author’s personal experience.
