Prostitution is considered to be the world’s oldest profession, yet has always been taboo. Prostitution according to Webster Merriam means the practice of an occupation of engaging in sexual activity with someone for payment. Prostitution has always been an edgy subject in the USA and also around the globe. People have different opinions and stands on legalizing prostitution. It is morally wrong for some people and some fear the judgment of society and avoid any kind of sexual activities. People get slut-shamed and are looked down upon if they practice prostitution. However, some might argue against legalization of prostitution because of personal hygiene and concerns about the health of the person. Legalizing prostitution can reduce the spread of sexually transmitted disease including AIDS. “In places where prostitution is illegal, sex workers are, in fact, more susceptible to sexually transmitted disease because of lack of access healthcare and other social services” (Listland). With prostitution criminalized, and the practice happening illegally, people cannot report any diseases resulting in higher rates of sexually transmitted disease. It seems rather unreasonable that a prostitute would risk getting arrested and take measures like telling their customers or doctor that they have a sexually transmitted disease. If prostitution is criminalized, the government cannot mandate any basic regulations like wearing a condom and doing weekly checkups for any kinds of sexually transmitted disease. These laws can be required, and the government can also establish programs to educate prostitutes on the risks of being sexually involved with strangers. Fear of getting arrested can make individuals not take any safety precautions. Most prostitutes do not have access to health insurance, or to decent healthcare. People have conducted many experiments and gathered numerous evidence that supports the legalization of prostitution. Evidence proves that in places where prostitution is legalized, sex-related crimes such as rapes and sexual violence drastically decreased. “In 1980, lawmakers accidentally removed the section that defines prostitution as a crime, and it went unnoticed until 2003. Technically, it had been in effect for almost three decades, from 1980-2009. During those years, the number of women involved in prostitution and size of the indoor sex market largely increased.
