Graduating early is when you graduate before you are suppose to. It was never common because no one ever seemed to think about it or want to put in the work to do it. For a long time high school was defined as the best time of your life. Everyone who spoke to you always said when you left you would miss it. No one really wanted to graduate early for that reason. People wanted to cherish the time they had in high school because they knew they only got to go through it once. It was a big idea to live up to. Senior year has this belief attached to it. It means a lot to people because it is their last year of high school and it was upsetting to know that you’d be leaving the people you have spent the last four years with. People thought you had to have as much fun as possible in high school and do all kinds of crazy things before you turned 18: when you would be considered and punished as an adult. Now those times have changed. High school is not looked upon as the best times of your life anymore. It is looked upon in almost a negative way. High school has changed a lot and it is not very enjoyable now. There are lots of reasons why someone would want to graduate early. For instance, maybe the student was bullied, maybe the student decided they wanted to move on and go to college, maybe the student got sick of their home life and wanted to move forward, or like me, maybe the student has their future waiting for them and all they need is to graduate high school so they could begin it.
The summer after my freshman year in college, I went back to Honduras to volunteer with the children who had leukemia at the National Public Hospital. I have never been as intimidated as my first day, when I followed the attending oncologist, while he was showing me the pediatric unit. He also explained my duties, which were attending and playing with the children. When I was left to start my job, I felt almost as nuisance in the midst of that hectic hospital room. Unsure on how to approach the patients, I looked around and found a tender smiling face. Although I was nervous, the warmth of his expression gave me the confidence to walk towards his bed. After a long and pleasant talk, I learned that Diego was from a remote rural town, and that his father visited him three days a week because he had to work to support his family. Diego suffered from a severe form of leukemia and had been hospitalized for nine months. Due to his poor health, he was unable to walk or even sit up in his bed. Hence, he developed atrophy in his legs causing them to lose strength and mobility. Yet with a huge sparkle in his eyes, Diego shared with me his dreams of becoming a great soccer player. As I turned away to retrieve the board games that he requested, I was moved by his courage to dream despite the hardships he was enduring at such a young age. This encounter was the beginning of an important turning point in my life. What initially began as a job became a real duty for me. I felt compelled and obligated to the children whom I interacted with, gaining satisfaction in doing so. When they come to the Unites States, graduates often struggle with a new language and standardized tests. Numerous foreign doctors like myself, explore alternative pathways into a healthcare career. Even if a foreign medical graduate speaks the language and passes the test, the disadvantage exists. Foreign medical graduates have a 50% chance they cannot advance their careers compared to the 94% of Seniors in US medical schools (Bailey, 2016). In the spring of my senior year of high school, I stepped into something completely mysterious to me.
Every night, as I sat on the table with my younger brothers assisting them with their homework, I hear a familiar sound at the door. As she walks her heels click, and I can hear her searching her bag for her keys, the next thing I know the keys are in the lock and as it turns me and my younger brothers’ jump. We run to the door and indeed we scream in unison “Mommy’s home”, one by one she gives us a hug and a kiss. My mother asks us how our day was, and if we finished our homework, she then looks to me and said “did you cook and assist your younger ones with their homework”; I replied “yes mom”. As I warm the food, I take my mother’s purse, jacket, and shoes put them away and prepare the table for her to eat dinner. As I glance at the clock, with bright red lights glaring at me I notice the time, it is 7:30 p.m. As a young child I never questioned my mom, about her daily program but it was understood to me that my mother worked very hard to raise three children on her own. My mother migrated from Nigeria at the age of 18, with a scholarship to study at the New York City College of Technology; she received her Bachelor’s of Science Degree. She created a path way of success for her younger siblings; the first to go to college, the first to come to America with a scholarship offer. My mother works at the Nigerian Embassy, she also has a certificate in Cisco Systems, she has her license in nursing and is a licensed realtor, there were no bearings on where my mother education stopped, soon after her siblings from Nigeria followed in pursuit of furthering their education and continuing the path of success. I remember this older doctor when i was in a hospital he was trying to put in an I.V. in my hand and he could not find the vein and he kept poking my vein with the needle continuously and it caused the vein in my hand to stick out more and to not look the same as the rest. There was a time in my life when I was in Law Enforcement. I had started out in the jail, as most officers do, coming out of the police academy. While working in the jail, I was offered a position as a road deputy. I was very excited about this opportunity as this was a major goal. This is why one gets into law enforcement, to be on the front line against the criminal element. After several years on the road, I was offered a detective position. Shortly after appointment, I attended a week long Death Investigation course at a large University in St. Louis. Little did I know, what I was about to learn, taking what I already knew, and what I was going to do with it, was going to have a profound effect on me for the rest of my life.
People have very different reasons on why going to college and getting an education is important for them. Some people go to college because that is what is expected of them, and others go because they have nothing else better to do. However, I am interested in going to college and obtaining a good education because it will benefit my family, my country, and me.
In the future, I wish to obtain an occupation in the medical field. I would like to start out by working for a Biology major and working in a premedical field in college where I can use my interest in medicine and my curiosity for knowledge to gain insight that would be needed to become a helpful doctor in the medical field. As I move along in my career, I would like to work my way through the pathway so that I can expand my skills in healing others, such as diagnostic abilities, effectively giving treatment and so on. I want to learn as much as possible so I can fulfill my ultimate dream of helping others that need answers to their medical problems and so that more people can live happily and healthily in the world. I hope to bring happiness to others and allowing people to live comfortably.
To be or not to be a doctor, that is the question. Personally, I have always held a high respect for doctors. During my childhood I saw doctors as these magical beings who had unknown knowledge of the human body. They were people with high authority and were to be held with high respect. To me, they were super heroes. Growing up, I have realized that doctors are just normal people who worked really hard to become the people they are today. Interestingly, I have chosen to go into a path of medicine in hopes of helping others through out my life. However, becoming a doctor requires an immense amount of compassion, perseverance, stamina, and need to help others. Not only must one possess such qualities, but
