Since the early days of our nation’s history, carbonated soft drinks have employed a distinct place in the hearts and palates of the American consumer. Coca-Cola is the most popular and biggest-selling soft drink in history, as well as one of the most recognizable brands in the world. Created in 1886 in Atlanta, Georgia, by Dr. John S. Pemberton, Coca-Cola was first offered as a fountain beverage at Jacob 's Pharmacy by mixing Coca-Cola syrup with carbonated water (Product Description Coca-Cola). Until the 1890s soft drinks were produced manually, from blowing bottles individually to filling and packaging; During the following two decades automated machinery greatly increased the productivity of soft drink plants (Avizienis). It is part of human free will, to choose whether to consume healthy food and beverages or not. Although, one can concede soda is in no way a nutritional substance, people have the right to choose to drink it whether in moderation or in excess. Therefore, no, cola should not be banned. The American beverage industry is a key role to the successes of our nation’s economy. It supports local communities, and creates numerous amounts of jobs. According to American Economics Group, Inc., “the beverage industry is responsible for creating 3.02 million jobs that generate $278 billion in economic activity” (The American Beverage Association). Without the 3 million plus jobs that these companies generate, our economy would be at an enormous fault. The Coca-Cola Company and The Coca-Cola Foundation have a long tradition of supporting educational programs. “In 2011, we invested more than $22 million in support of academic scholarships, first-generation college scholarships, mentoring, dropout prevention and literacy and reading programs” (Giving through the Coca-Cola foundation and through the Coca-Cola Company). This company is donating money for the greater good of the country in educating people. Without the soft drink industry they wouldn’t be able to provide others with funds to educate themselves and one day become somebody. Another great thing that beverage companies do is help and donate millions towards charities. “In 2003, beverage companies donated roughly $326 million to charities” (The American Beverage Association). These companies not only provide jobs and give to charities, they help promote the biggest events that are to come. For example, Coca-Cola sponsors the biggest event that happens every 4 years The Olympic Games. “The company sponsored the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, and has supported every Olympic Games since.
