The Benefits Of Baseball

Baseball is different from other sports as the game is played at a slower pace, yet lasts longer than most sports. Specificity is key to the training of a baseball player during season and out of season. A contender of the game needs to be trained in certain areas such as throwing, sprinting, and hitting as each position is different. The remarkable part about baseball is that you do not need too big to play. With the correct training and practice, a player will excel in their performance. Each pitch, hit, and throw requires explosiveness and consistency to be successful. Workout regimens for baseball players vary for pitchers and position players from in season to preseason in order to be healthy year round. Benefits of workouts include adaptations …show more content…

Anaerobic exercises are types of workouts that improve the explosiveness and power of position and pitchers. In “Pre-season Push” Even Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays states “I don’t want to put 500 pounds on my back and squat, because it doesn’t translate for me on the field. My workout program is tailored to being baseball strong.”, meaning that high weight isn't critical for baseball players in order to perform better (Lisanti and Keith, 2015, Page 1). Pre-season workouts for all players include variations of squats, dumbbell incline and bench, rotational lifts, medicine ball throws, resistance with exercise bands, sprints with rest in between, box jumps, ladders for footwork, and many other lifts (Williams, 2017, Paragraph 6-13). Out of season workouts should be rapid with a comfortable weight to decrease the risk of injury and increase acceleration and strength as the arm is very important for the performance of these athletes. In season workouts are similar, but they must be lighter weight and explosive to be sure the arm and core maintain healthy due to the amount of …show more content…

“Should Pitchers Distance Run? What the Research Says” by Eric Cressey, he states that “For pitchers, this practice is utilized to enhance and maintain endurance during games, as well as to maintain body composition throughout the season”, this is a small factor for game performance. Baseball players do not need aerobic training as much as anaerobic training as it is not necessary throughout game play (Cressey, 2012, Paragraph 7). Running poles for distance should not be the focal point of a pitcher, but it benefits in small amounts to the body's systems. The cardiovascular system will have increased stroke volume, contractility, and blood supply. The respiratory system will have better endurance of the muscles, more efficiency at absorbing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide, gas exchange, and heart volume. The nervous system will have higher neural and acetylcholine. Muscles will have efficient endurance, better capacity to absorb energy, and increased capillarization of slow twitch muscles and mitochondria (HWE, 2017).
Pitchers need to be doing interval sprints to simulate a game. The interval in training means the rest in between pitches while the sprinting stimulates the work put into each pitch. The average time between pitches is 15-20 seconds which can help coaches determine the time between sprints. Cressey states that “anything 40 yards and under for 4-8
