The Bay of Pigs was one of the most important political decisions in the history of the United States. The decisions that were made by President John F Kennedy showed us that the United States was far from perfect. The Bay of Pigs Invasion globally embarrassed the United States because of the lack of constructed thought put into it and its completely failed outcome.

The Bag of Pigs Invasion was an unsuccessful attempt by United States exiles to overthrow the government of the Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro. It occurred on April 17, 1961 when six ships departed from a port in Nicaragua and landed on Bahia de Cochinos (bay of pigs) on the southern coast of Cuba. This invasion was CIA backed and lead by about 1300 exiles armed with United States weaponry. To understand why the United States decided to proceed with this invasion, it is necessary to explain the political background of the dictator Fidel Castro and the United States government of that time.

Castro initially came into power by overthrowing Fulgencio Batista’s dictatorship in 1959. As soon as this happened, The United States and Cuban relations began to deteriorate. Castros’ new government had nationalized a majority of US owned businesses and private property in Cuba and also established economic and diplomatic ties with the USSR. Because the United States was in the middle of the Cold War with USSR, this scared them, so they immediately took action. The United States cut off sugar purchases from Cuba and also placed an embargo on all exports to Cuba with exception to food and medicine.
