It is known as the bloodiest battle ever fought on American soil: The Battle of Gettysburg. It seemed that the battlefield was hungering and thirsting for blood. Entering with great momentum, the South lost. The Battle of Gettysburg roared on for three whole days until the North, finally, was victorious. This victory added to the North’s dwindling momentum. This battle delivered a major blow to the South’s ego and drove the Confederacy back into the South. This victory gave the North an offensive position in the war, won a major battle, gave the North hope, and proved that the North was capable of beating the South.
In May, 1863, General Robert E. Lee led his army on the invasion of the north. Entering with great numbers, the Confederacy was bound to win. The first battle was the battle of Chancellorsville. (“Gettysburg”) General Lee and his army claimed an astounding victory over the Union. The South was gaining more momentum with every battle. The morale of General
Lee’s men was high. Lee then led his army on stage two of the invasion: The Gettysburg Campaign. (“Gettysburg”) Lee intended to secure supplies, such as shoes, from the Pennsylvania farmlands. General Robert E. Lee needed to threaten northern cities and win a major battle in the North. This would strike fear into the hearts of the northern people. On the other side the Northern general Joseph Hooker was given an order. Abraham Lincoln ordered him to move his army in pursuit of General Lee and his men. Three days later General Joseph Hooker was replaced by General George Gordon Meade. Meade immediately moved his forces between D.C. and General Lee. When Lee found out about General Meads move he made his. He stopped in his tracks and focused his full eff...

Both Armies repositioned their artillery to the most advantageous position but it appeared that the Army of Northern Virginia had surrounded the Army of the Potomac but in a less defensible position. When two Armies meet on a battlefield the overall objective is to eliminate the opposition, so one of them would have to make a move. Lee ordered Generals Longstreet and Ewell to attack but due to a lack of decisive action on Longstreet’s part, the day would end in the bloodiest offensive of the battle and Longstreet would suffer great losses by Cemetery Hill .
Lincoln’s Famous Address written by Roselynn Marquez talks about how Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was only 270 words, and it followed a two hour introduction by Edward Everett. Being short was not the only memorable point that the speech had. “Another was the simplicity of its language. As historian Allen Guelzo notes, ‘the address relies on crisp, plain vocabulary.’ He points out that most of the words are only one-syllable. Doris Kearns Goodwin concludes, ‘Lincoln had translated the story of his country...into words and ideas accessible to every American.’ By making his ideas easy to grasp, Lincoln gave them directness and power” (Marquez). The Gettysburg Address to this day is known as a unforgettable expression inscribing the war that took on in the country. In summarization, Abraham Lincoln is known widely for the Address he made in Gettysburg after the battle that took place
In 1863, the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, was awoken to the beginning of what was to be the turning point of the Civil War for the Union. It began as a small skirmish, but by its end it involved so many Americans to which would become one of the bloodiest battles ever taken place on Unites States soil. The Battle of Gettysburg was not only a turning point in the war.
The battle of Gettysburg occurred over three hot summer days, July 1 to July 3, 1863, around the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It began as a meeting engagement, but by its end involved approximately 170,000 Americans. The battle is considered to be the turning point in the American Civil War and is one of the most studied battles in American history. The events that took place at Gettysburg had a tremendous impact on the outcome of the Civil War and the fate of the United States. It is far easier for us in the present than it was for those at Gettysburg, to look back and determine the path that the leaders should have taken.
Nevertheless, an attitude they show is their cause for engaging in the war. On page 110, Lee describes, “With every step of a soldier, with every tick of the clock, the army was gaining safety, closer to victory, closer to the dream of independence.” His words reveal that their reason for coming was to gain their long overdue independence. Without a cause worth fighting for on each side, the war would have no fuel or reason to continue. In like manner, another attitude of the South was their admiration for their commander general. On page 251, Longstreet proclaims, “Colonel, let me explain something. The secret of General Lee is that men love him and follow him with faith in him. That’s one secret.” I believe this clarifies that the bond of brotherhood and respect for each other in this army would allow for these soldiers to follow their leader blindly. The overwhelming amount of faith and trust among the Army of the Northern Virginia is inspiring. The Confederates prove in these appearances that they do indeed have an important cause that they are willing to die
“Their differing perceptions of the nature of war form the backbone of the difficult relationship between these two men.” Lee, an older soldier, values much of an offensive warfare approach, while Longstreet values a defensive warfare approach. Both men consistently argue about the best option for the Confederacy. However, “no matter how much he might disagree, Longstreet defers to Lee’s decisions.” In an argument as to who was right, none of the developed tactics provide clear evidence as to what was going to work, especially with a military of lesser men, considering the war in 1863. Although General Lee’s tactics did not work during the Battle of Gettysburg, there is no evidence that General Longstreet’s defensive strategy would have worked significantly better. Therefore, neither of the generals exceeded the other when it comes to military strategies, which rather debunks Shaara’s depiction of Longstreet’s advanced knowledge of modern warfare. Despite of the importance of the Battle of Gettysburg, often marked as the turning point of the war, General Longstreet should not obey an order that results in a significant loss of men that would be extremely difficult to replace at this time. Already limited by the amount of men still able to fight, pushing additional forces in an open battle would just nearly deplete the confederate soldiers completely, and
When we compare the military leaders of both North and South during the Civil War, it is not hard to see what the differences are. One of the first things that stand out is the numerous number of Northern generals that led the “Army of the Potomac.” Whereas the Confederate generals, at least in the “Army of Northern Virginia” were much more stable in their position. Personalities, ambitions and emotions also played a big part in effective they were in the field, as well as their interactions with other officers.
The famous Battle of Gettysburg was a major part of the Civil War. Before the Battle of Gettysburg, the Confederate army had the advantage. Although the casualty tolls of both armies were relatively close in numbers, the North and the South’s attitudes towards the war completely differed after the Battle of Gettysburg. The events occurring in the months following the historic battle were what gave the Union Troops the greatest advantage leading to their victory at the end of the Civil War.
The Civil War is one of the defining wars in the history of this great nation. The Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle in American history, and a turning point in the four year war. At the time, Gettysburg was a small, quiet town generally unaffected by the war. General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate States of America and General George Meade of the Union converged in Gettysburg, and a conflict quickly arose. After three long days of battle the Union pulled away with a victory, though not an easy one. This essay will outline the six themes of history; in essence the who, what, when, where, why, and who cares of this infamous battle.
The nation and people were separated and each man fought for what they believed to be right for them. Whether the men sided with the north or south it really did not matter. Whether they believed slavery should be abolished or not, it was not too prevalent in this book. Some men fought for themselves, for their families, to protect their land, and some because it was the morally right and loyal thing to do. Whatever reasons the soldiers decided to fight that day and days subsequently, I am sure they could not have dreamed of the legacy that their heroism and bravery that The Battle of Gettysburg has left in American History. With over 50,000 casualties occurred that occurred over three days of aggressive fighting, the battle was vital turning point in the civil war.
This battle was the turning point of the Civil War, it also proved that Robert E. Lee was not invincible as most northerners thought. The battle lasted three days and there were 46,000-51,000 deaths. The death tolls were pretty much even which was remarkable due to the South having two armies to the Norths one. The South retreated on July 4th, 1863. This battle was important because if the South would have won the battle they would have won the war. The North eventually won the war because this battle turned the tides. Abraham Lincoln 's Gettysburg address was the most famous speech of all time. Astonishingly it only lasted two minutes. It showed the new birth of our freedom, which was huge to our country. It was about how the North could win the war, and how they would win the war. The war ended on April 9th, 1865. Blacks soon got the same rights as all other human beings. Abraham Lincoln decided to let Louisiana back into the nation. This was the first state back into the Union after they had seceded. Five days after the war Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed. His killer was John Wilkes Booth, an actor in the Forbes Theatre. His motive to kill was that the south had lost the war. after shooting the president, Mr. Booth jumped off the balcony and out the back entrance onto a horse. He went missing for 12 days. Few people helped Mr. Booth but one did and let him stay in
General Lee knows that we have inexperienced men and aims at improving the quality of the troops. He upgrades the quality by tightening command and discipline, improving morale, and convincing the soldiers that the confederacy was in full command of the situation. Lee knew that we are lacking, and devised initiatives to nullify the Union’s superiority in manpower, armaments, and supply by destroying their prearranged plans.
... soldiers died in this battle. Many more where captured or missing. After the battle president Lincoln came to say a few words. What he said would be put down in history, making him one of the most famous people in the world. Lincoln spoke the Gettysburg Address and in it he made the Civil War stand for what it truly was. A war to end slavery.
On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered ‘’The Gettysburg Address’’. Abraham Lincoln’s purpose in ‘’The Gettysburg Address’’ was to persuade listeners to finish what those who fought for died for by treating everyone else equally. ‘’The Gettysburg Address’’ is the most compelling speech due to its use of rhetorical
