Netflix was in the news recently with their groundbreaking deal with the largest cable provider in the United States, agreeing to pay Comcast for higher level connections to improve its services. Netflix has accounted for approximately one-third of the Internet usage recently. This deal comes after Netflix had touted strong opinions against Comcast for its disregard for network neutrality. Network neutrality is the concept that every website has the same tools and abilities as any other website. The general idea is that no network will have an advantage over another, streaming the same services through one big Internet “pipe”. It keeps the playing field level for all those looking to use the Internet to provide goods and services. The FCC looks to protect network neutrality at any cost. Internet service providers such as Comcast, AT&T and Verizon lay claim that due to recent upgrades to its services, it deserves to charge a premium to streamlined networks, to help compensate with its costs. Some experts deem this to be the beginning of the end of network neutrality. This blockbuster deal could be the first step to the end of network neutrality. Netflix had been attempting to strike a deal with Comcast on their terms, but with the recent announcement of Comcast acquiring Time Warner Cable, the nation’s 5th largest cable company, it seemed Netflix struck a deal just because the only opportunity might not be as available later on. With the growing demand that Netflix needs to service its customers, Netflix decided that in its best interest to temporarily adhere to Comcast’s demands in order for the immediate fix for its customers.
