In the article «Speak of Me as I Am: Othello» Maynard Mack argues that the well-known Shakespeare play has been wrongfully categorized for several decades. Most critics and readers consider «Othello» to be one of Shakespeare´s greatest stories about tragic love, and though the story is centered around Othello´s and Desdemona´s love, Mack believes that the true theme and plot of the story unravels the battle between good and evil. According to Mack, the battle between good and evil is not a new phenomenon to Shakespeare, it is illustrated in numerous of his plays and poem, including «Hamlet», «Twelfth Night», and «Romeo and Juliet». The story of Othello does indeed focus more on the battle between good and evil more than it does on love. There is no denying that the play unravels the beautiful, yet tragic love story of Othello and Desdemona, but the main theme and issues that consistently repeats itself, is the battle between good and evil. However, the issue in not illustrated in a traditional sense where good and evil go up against each other on a battlefield, instead, the battle takes place within each individual. Everyone is persuade by evil at some point in life, wether it be negative emotions, a person, materialistic things, or the devil himself, but it is up to each individual to overcome it and be a hero. It is said that there is no good without evil, meaning that in order for Iago to be evil, there must be a good. One might think that Othello is good, but that is not the case because he too is influenced by evil and he is not able to overcome it, so the good has to be something different. Thinking about it closely, it is clear that Iago was somewhat good in the beginning, but when his self-image is threaten, he became evil. As stated earlier, it s Othello´s betrayal that leads to Iago actions, but it is not until he foreshadow´s his plan to Roderigo that the readers truly understand that evil overcomes good in his battle. "O, sir, content you. / I follow him to serve my turn upon him (1,1,40). At this point, Iago already knows that Othello considers him as an honest man, so completing the plan should not be an issue. Iago could chose good, but instead he lets jealousy, negativity and rage consume him, and it consume him to the point where he is no longer human.
