The books I chose to read were The Autobiography of Malcolm X, The Story of My Experiments with Truth: An Autobiography by Mahatma Gandhi, and The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom. I read Malcolm X because I wanted to know the differences between the book and the movie. I read Mahatma Gandhi’s Autobiography to get clarification on some things I learned about him in class. I read The Hiding Place because I was very interested in hearing her story. I want to focus mainly on “The Hiding Place” because it gave me more knowledge about Nazi Germany. When this topic is discussed in class, the main focus is usually Adolf Hitler or the diary of Anne Frank. I have never learned about Nazi Germany from anyone else perspective. The entire book was intriguing to me. It was nothing I didn’t like about it. To say I didn’t like something about it would be ignorant, for this is about someone’s life experiences and I read it to gain knowledge on her experience. From the description of her home, to her aunts and mother who passed away, to the scripture reading they have every morning at 8:30 am I felt like I was a part of the story. They were a genuine family, and not very many families’s spent time together in the old fashioned way as they did. I adored the young love she gained for her brothers’ friend Karel. “But you’re so—so grown up. Forgive me, Corrie, of course you are! It’s just that I’ve always thought of you as the little girl with the enormous blue eyes. He stared at me a little longer and then added softly, And now the little girl is a lady, and a lovely one.” Seeing the transition of her falling for him as a young child to seeing them two meet when they are both older was quite breathe taking to me because her crush for him never died. ...

...d’s way of leading Corrie in the right direction that she was mistakenly allowed to leave the prison when she was supposed to be sent to the gas chamber with everyone else that was her age. Also, the pill bottle she snuck in for Betsie and allowed others to use as well never seemed to be gone, as if it was always full. These seemed like miracles, which is why Corrie never stopped pushing forward no matter what happened. Corrie felt as though she was Gods messenger, and she did get the message across to all the Jews who wondered how to forgive the ones in charge of it all. “The Hiding Place” was a very powerful story. It was nice to read a story about a woman who had an effect on so many people’s lives. I enjoyed experiencing her life, although quite tragic, through the book. It was a learning experience I will appreciate and keep in mind for the rest of my years.
