The novel The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Garth Stein, is both an emotional and an intelligent read portrayed through the author’s use of flashback, humor, and intellect. Through these, the author tells a meaningful story about life and death and the importance of both. The first page of The Art of Racing in the Rain is enough to get the reader hooked. ”Gestures are all that I have. Sometimes they must be grand in nature” (Stein, 2008). The story is being told from a dogs point of view. Enzo cannot communicate the way he’d like to by using words and sounds, so he must rely on his actions and his gestures to tell him story to his owner. So he pours his heart out into his book. The beginning of the book starts out with the dog, Enzo, barely holding onto life. As he starts to drift further and further away, he starts reflecting on his life and his past. As his owner Denny, who is a race car driver, once said “A driver cannot contemplate their move while they make them. Racing is like living; you can only do it, and then remember it later” (Stein, 2008). Enzo's trip down memory lane begins with him reflecting on the day Denny chose him out of a liter of puppies. Denny takes Enzo away from his country farm home, and domesticates him in an apartment in the city, Seattle. Enzo hates the new city life, but he loves Denny. Enzo reflects on the time when Denny found himself a life partner, Eve. He reflects on how at first, his relationship with Eve was a rocky one due to the fact that Enzo felt replaced and Eve was annoyed by Enzo. However, their relationship took a turn for the best when Eve got pregnant and Enzo literally had to stand in for Denny in the delivery process due to Denny being in Daytona for a race. The author uses amazing contrast of these two characters, Eve and Enzo, to make for a mellow dramatic reading. Stein doesn’t flat out tell you how different these

In the opening passage of Tomson Highway’s Kiss of the Fur Queen, Abraham Okimasis, a caribou hunter participating in an intense race, strives to reach the finish line with his exhausted self and huskies. When Denny’s late wife Eve dies, his whole world is changed. Trish and Maxwell - the evil Twins - plot against Denny by pulling him into a major court battle. As a result, Denny is forced to sacrifice major opportunities in order to win custody of his daughter, Zoë. “ “I appreciate your generous offer,” he [Denny] said. “But I’m afraid certain things prevent me from leaving this country – or even this state – at the moment. So I have to decline.” (Stein 276) Luca Pantoni – a man that worked at Ferrari – asked Denny if he wanted to move out to Italy with his family where he could test cars for a living. With the major court battle going on Denny had to politely refuse the offer. Knowing Denny’s personality it would have been difficult for him to decline such a great offer, but at that moment he had to think about his family first. Next to Eve, Zoë is the most important person in Denny’s life. The death of Eve was unexpected for both Denny and Zoë, but Denny could not let his sadness and frustration show...

A composer can create images dependant on the form of the language of texts to shape a responders understanding of the ideas and themes prompted by people and their experiences. The German film, ‘Run Lola Run’ written and directed by Tom Tykwer, focuses on the experiences of the protagonist Lola to explore the themes of the inevitable force of time, and the issue of freewill verses determinism. In Pather Panchali (Satyajit Ray, 1955) the rain sequence is tremendously significant to the entirety of the story Ray, is known for his technical work and this scene is no different. Skillfully, Ray uses camera techniques, sound and editing to show Durga’s excitement of the rainstorm. Concurrently, it is also ironic considering Durga’s death only a few scenes after. Particularly, the editing choices for this sequence is interesting. Ray’s use of editing, combined with his sound design creates the same sense of curiosity, excitement and anticipation within his audience that he creates in his characters.
